Nobody Knows Where the Septic Tank Is. Here Is How to Find It.
The worst time to start looking for a septic tank is while it is backing up into the house. It takes twenty minutes to find on a good day.

On acreage around Farmersville, Nevada, Caddo Mills and the rural parts of the counties we serve, septic is normal rather than unusual. And on properties that have changed hands a few times, the location of the tank is frequently institutional knowledge that walked out the door with a previous owner.
That is fine right up until something goes wrong, at which point the first hour of the visit is spent looking for a tank instead of dealing with the problem. It is worth locating and marking yours on a dry afternoon when nothing is urgent.
Start with the paperwork
Septic systems in Texas are permitted, and the permit generally includes a site drawing showing tank and drainfield locations. County environmental health or the local authority holding on-site sewage facility records is the place to ask, and for anything installed in the last few decades there is a reasonable chance a diagram exists.
It is a phone call, and it saves probing an acre of pasture.
Then follow the pipe
- Find where the main drain leaves the house. In a pier-and-beam house you can often see it directly from the crawlspace. On a slab, look for the cleanout — a capped pipe stub near the foundation.
- Note the direction it heads. Septic tanks are almost always in line with that run and rarely more than 10 to 25 feet from the foundation.
- Walk that line looking for surface clues: two slight depressions or rises a few feet apart where the tank lids sit, a rectangle of grass that greens differently, or an area that stays wetter or drier than everything around it.
- Probe carefully with a thin metal rod at intervals along the line. A concrete lid gives an unmistakable feel through a probe.
- Once you find it, mark it permanently. A stake, a paver, a note in the file — something that survives the next owner.
When the simple methods do not work
A flushable transmitter and a locator will trace the drain line from inside the house to the tank inlet directly, which is the definitive method and takes very little time in skilled hands. Ground-penetrating radar and metal detectors both have their uses depending on whether the tank has steel reinforcement or a metal riser.
Conventional versus aerobic — know which you have
It changes everything about maintenance. A conventional system is a tank and a gravity drainfield with no moving parts. An aerobic system has an air compressor, a treatment chamber, usually a chlorinator, and a pump that sprays treated effluent onto the surface through sprinkler heads.
If you have sprinkler heads that run at odd hours and you never installed an irrigation system, you have an aerobic system. It has mechanical components that wear out, it is required to be maintained under a service contract in most Texas counties, and neglecting it produces failures a conventional system never has.
The maintenance that prevents most failures
- Pump the tank on a schedule — commonly every three to five years, sooner for a small tank or a full house.
- Keep vehicles, livestock and structures off the drainfield. Compaction ruins it and it is not repairable by any cheap means.
- Keep roof and surface drainage away from the field. Saturating it with rainwater takes away the capacity you need for wastewater.
- Do not put grease, wipes or anything labelled flushable into the system, and go easy on chemicals that kill the bacteria doing the work.
- On an aerobic system, keep the service contract and make sure the air compressor is actually running. A failed compressor is silent and the system degrades to something much worse than a conventional tank.
Telling a septic problem from a plumbing problem
This is where we get most of our septic-adjacent calls, and the distinction is worth knowing. Multiple fixtures backing up simultaneously, particularly the lowest ones in the house, points downstream — the line to the tank or the tank itself. One fixture misbehaving while the rest are fine is a plumbing fault inside the house.
Wet ground or unusually lush growth over the drainfield, or odour outdoors, points at the field rather than the plumbing. We can tell you clearly which side of the line the fault sits on, which determines who you need next.

How often should a septic tank be pumped?
Commonly every three to five years, though it depends on tank size and how many people are using it. A tank sized for a three-bedroom house serving six people needs it sooner. If it has never been pumped in your ownership and you do not know when it last was, that answer is now.

Everything in the house is backing up at once. Is that the septic tank?
It points that way. When multiple fixtures back up together, especially the lowest ones, the restriction is downstream of the house — the line to the tank, or a tank that is full or has a failed outlet. A single misbehaving fixture with everything else normal is an interior plumbing problem instead.
