AC Repair

When an air conditioner quits in a North Texas July, the pressure is on to fix it fast — and that pressure is exactly why people end up buying systems they did not need. A blower motor, a capacitor, a contactor, a clogged drain line and a failed compressor all present as "it stopped cooling." Four of those five are repairs.

We diagnose first. Static pressure, temperature split across the coil, refrigerant charge and superheat, electrical draw, airflow. Those readings tell us what actually failed rather than what is easiest to sell.

We work on every major brand, and we answer 24/7 — because a house without cooling in August is not a next-week problem, especially with kids or older family members at home.

Know the signs

When you need AC repair

The symptoms homeowners actually describe when they call us — and what each one usually means.

Running constantly but the air is not cold

The system is working and something is preventing it from moving heat. Low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, a failing compressor, or a blocked filter starving airflow. The distinction matters — adding refrigerant to a leaking system is a temporary fix that costs money every year.

Weak airflow at the registers

Air barely moving even though the system is on. Filter, blower motor, blower capacitor, a collapsed or disconnected flex duct in the attic, or an iced-over evaporator coil.

It turns on and off every few minutes

Short cycling. Oversized equipment, a refrigerant problem, a failing capacitor, a dirty coil, or a thermostat in a bad location. It is hard on the compressor and it never dehumidifies properly, which is why the house feels clammy at the right temperature.

Water around the indoor unit or a ceiling stain

A clogged condensate drain line. Extremely common here, and left alone it overflows the pan into whatever is beneath it. Many systems have a safety switch that shuts everything down before that happens — which is why a total no-cool call sometimes turns out to be a drain line.

Ice on the refrigerant line or the indoor coil

Always a symptom, never the problem. Restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system to fan-only to thaw it before anyone can diagnose it properly, and do not run cooling on a frozen coil.

New noises or new smells

Grinding or squealing points to a motor bearing. A loud hum with no start is often a capacitor. Rapid clicking is usually a relay or contactor. A musty smell is biological growth on a wet coil, and a burning smell means shut it off and call.

How we work

What actually happens on the job

No mystery, no vague diagnosis. Here is the sequence we follow every time.

01

Measure before diagnosing

Temperature split across the coil, static pressure, refrigerant pressures with superheat and subcooling, and electrical draw on the motors. Numbers first — an eyeball diagnosis on a cooling system is a coin flip.

02

Find the cause, not just the failed part

A capacitor that failed at three years old failed for a reason. A coil that froze did so because something restricted airflow. Replacing the symptom leaves you calling again in a month.

03

Tell you the options plainly

What it costs to repair, how much life that likely buys, and — if the system is old enough for it to be a real question — what replacement would look like. Both numbers, no pressure, decision is yours.

04

Verify performance before leaving

Re-measure the split and pressures after the repair. A repair is finished when the system performs, not when the part is installed.

North Texas specifics

What our summers do to a cooling system

A North Texas summer is a long-duration endurance test rather than a series of hot days. Systems here run near-continuously for months, which means components accumulate runtime far faster than the same equipment would in a milder climate — capacitors, contactors and fan motors simply see more hours. Add the humidity load coming off Lake Ray Hubbard for anyone in Rockwall, Rowlett or Heath, and a system that seems adequate in May can feel clammy and underpowered by August even at the same thermostat setting. Two practical consequences: airflow restrictions punish you far harder here than elsewhere, so filter neglect turns into a frozen coil quickly; and a unit that is marginally undersized or marginally undercharged will reveal it in July rather than never.

What it costs

Straight talk on pricing

AC repairs span a wide range because the parts do. A capacitor is one of the least expensive repairs in the trade; a compressor is at the other end and frequently pushes the conversation toward replacement. Refrigerant work depends on the refrigerant type — older R-22 systems are expensive to recharge because the refrigerant itself is scarce, which is a genuine factor in repair-versus-replace on older equipment. We diagnose, then quote the specific repair, and we tell you when putting money into an old system is not the better choice.

FAQ

AC Repair questions we get asked

My AC is running but blowing warm air. What is the most likely cause?

Start with the simple things: check that the filter is not completely loaded, that the outdoor unit is running and not caked with cottonwood and grass clippings, and that nothing has tripped a breaker. Beyond that, the common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor stopping the compressor while the fan keeps running, or a frozen evaporator coil. The fastest thing you can do before we arrive is switch the system to fan-only, which starts thawing a frozen coil.

Should I just add refrigerant?

A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, it leaked, and adding more without finding the leak means paying for the same refrigerant again next season while the leak gets worse. Sometimes a top-up is a legitimate stopgap to get through a heat wave while you plan a repair — but it should be an informed decision, not a service call that quietly repeats annually.

How do I know if I should repair or replace?

The honest factors are age, the cost of this specific repair, the refrigerant type, and how many repairs you have already paid for. A capacitor on a seven-year-old unit is an easy repair. A compressor on a fifteen-year-old R-22 system usually is not worth it, because the refrigerant is expensive and scarce and the rest of the system is at the same age. We will lay out both numbers and let you decide without pressure.

What temperature should my AC actually reach in a Texas summer?

A correctly working residential system is generally expected to hold something in the range of a twenty-degree difference below outdoor temperature at peak. On a 105° afternoon, a house at 78° is a system working correctly, not a system failing. If you are setting the thermostat to 68° and blaming the equipment for not getting there, the equipment may be fine — though it is worth checking insulation, duct leakage and whether the system was sized correctly for the house.

Do you charge for the diagnostic?

We tell you the diagnostic charge before we come out, so there are no surprises on the invoice. What we will not do is guess at a repair over the phone or quote a part before we have measured the system.
