Outdoor Faucets and Texas Freezes: Why the Leak Shows Up Inside
The damage from a frozen outdoor faucet almost never appears at the faucet. It appears in the wall behind it, weeks later, when you finally use the hose.

Here is the pattern we see every spring. A homeowner goes out to water something for the first time since autumn, turns the hose bib on, and within a minute there is water coming through the ceiling or soaking the drywall in a downstairs room. The faucet outside looks perfectly fine.
What happened was a freeze months earlier. Water in the pipe behind the wall expanded, split the pipe, and then everything stayed frozen or dry until the tap was opened. The break was there the whole time — it just needed pressure and flow to reveal itself.
That delay is what makes hose bib freezes distinctive, and it is why the protection has to happen before winter rather than after you notice a problem.
Why North Texas gets this worse than colder places
It sounds backwards but it is exactly right. Homes in genuinely cold climates are built for cold — pipe runs through conditioned space, exterior walls are deeply insulated, frost-proof fixtures are standard, and everyone grew up knowing the routine.
Homes here are not built that way. Plenty of North Texas hose bibs are standard compression faucets with the valve seat right at the exterior wall, connected to pipe running through an uninsulated wall cavity. A hard freeze arrives every few years rather than every year, so nobody is in the habit of preparing, and the result is that a single severe night produces more burst pipes across this metro than an entire winter does further north.
Standard versus frost-proof — the difference matters
There are two kinds of outdoor faucet and knowing which you have changes what you need to do.
Standard hose bib
The valve — the part that actually stops the water — is right at the outside wall, an inch or two behind the handle. That means water sits in the fixture and in the pipe immediately behind it, in the coldest part of the wall. This is the one that bursts.
Frost-proof sillcock
Looks similar from outside but the valve seat is six to twelve inches back, inside the conditioned wall cavity. When you close the handle, the water stops back there and the exposed section drains out through the spout. Nothing is left in the cold part to freeze.
How to tell which you have: a frost-proof unit has a noticeably longer body, and when you shut it off you will hear water draining out of the spout for a few seconds. A standard bib stops dead the instant you close it.
What to do before the first freeze
- Disconnect every hose, from every bib, and drain them. This is the most important item on the list and it costs nothing.
- Fit insulated covers over each hose bib. They are inexpensive foam or hard-shell caps and they take seconds to install.
- Find and use the interior shutoff if you have one. Many homes have a dedicated valve for each exterior faucet, often in a garage, utility area or crawl space. Shut it, then open the outside faucet to drain the line, and leave the outside faucet open through the winter.
- Shut off and drain the irrigation system, including the backflow preventer, which is exposed and expensive to replace.
- Insulate any exposed pipe in the garage, attic and along exterior walls where you can reach it.
During a hard freeze
- Let a faucet on an exterior wall drip. Moving water is much harder to freeze, and a slow drip relieves the pressure that actually splits pipe.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm room air can reach the plumbing behind them.
- Keep the garage door closed if any plumbing runs through the garage.
- Do not turn the heat off or set it back dramatically if you leave the house. A cold house is how interior pipes freeze.
How to check for damage in spring
Do not just turn the hose on and walk away. Test each bib deliberately, with someone able to watch inside if you can manage it.
- Have someone stand inside near the wall the faucet is on, or be ready to check immediately yourself.
- Turn the faucet on for only a few seconds, then off.
- Look and listen inside for water, dripping, or a rushing sound in the wall.
- Check the ceiling below if the bib is on an upper level, and look at the baseboard and drywall on the inside of that wall.
- If flow from the faucet is noticeably weaker than you remember, that is a warning too — it can mean water is escaping upstream of the spout.
If anything looks wrong, shut the water off at the main or at the dedicated valve for that bib and call before testing again. Every additional test pushes more water into the wall.
Worth upgrading

Do foam faucet covers actually work?
They help, and they are cheap enough that there is no reason not to use them — but they are insulation, not a guarantee. They slow heat loss from the fixture, which is often enough for a mild freeze. In a severe multi-day event, a cover on a standard hose bib with a hose still attached will not save it. The cover is one layer; disconnecting hoses and using an interior shutoff are the layers that matter most.
My outdoor faucet leaks from the handle when I turn it on. Is that freeze damage?
Not necessarily — a leak at the handle is usually just a worn packing washer, which is a small repair unrelated to freezing. The freeze damage to worry about is a leak you cannot see: water appearing inside the wall, a wet spot on the drywall inside, or a noticeable drop in flow. A dripping handle is a nuisance; water in the wall is a repair.
Should I leave the outside faucet open all winter?
Yes, if you have shut off and drained it at an interior valve. Leaving the exterior faucet open lets any remaining water drain out and gives expansion somewhere to go. Do not leave it open without shutting the interior valve first, for obvious reasons. Mark it so you remember to close it in spring before you turn the supply back on.
What about my sprinkler system backflow preventer?
It is one of the most commonly freeze-damaged components on a property and one of the more expensive to replace, because it sits above ground and fully exposed. Before winter, shut off the irrigation supply, drain the system, and insulate the backflow assembly properly. Insulated bags made for the purpose work well; a towel and a bag do not.
