The Laundry Room Checks Worth Doing Once a Year
A washing machine supply hose failure floods a house faster than almost anything else. The prevention takes ten minutes a year.

The laundry room contains a permanently pressurised water connection, a drain, and an appliance that vibrates. It is a predictable source of water damage and almost none of it is unavoidable.
Supply hoses
The single most important item. Rubber hoses fail, and when one lets go it is a pressurised line running until someone finds it.
- Replace rubber hoses with braided stainless steel. Cheap, and it is the highest-value change in the room.
- Check them annually for bulging, cracking, corrosion at the fittings or dampness.
- Replace them on a schedule rather than on failure, regardless of appearance.
- Do not overtighten the fittings — hand tight plus a modest turn.

The shutoff
There should be a valve behind the machine. Two things worth knowing: where it is, and whether it actually works.
Old valves seize. Turning it once a year keeps it operable and tells you now rather than during an emergency. A single-lever valve that shuts both hot and cold at once is a worthwhile upgrade.

The drain standpipe
- The hose should be secured in the standpipe, not just resting in it — a modern machine pumps out with force and an unsecured hose jumps out.
- The standpipe needs to be tall enough and properly vented, or it siphons and gurgles.
- Lint builds up in the standpipe over time and causes overflow during the drain cycle. If yours has ever backed up, that is why.
- A slow drain elsewhere in the house can show up here first.
The pan
If the laundry is on an upper floor or above finished space, a drain pan under the machine with a line to a drain is worth having. So is a leak detector — inexpensive, and it alerts you before the ceiling does.
The dryer vent
Not plumbing, and it belongs on the same annual check because it is a fire risk.
- Clean the duct, not just the lint trap.
- Use rigid or semi-rigid duct rather than flexible foil.
- Keep the run short and straight.
- Confirm it terminates outside, with a working damper, and that the flap actually opens.
- If clothes are taking longer to dry, the vent is the first suspect.
