Ask a plumber which small component causes the most disproportionate damage in a house and you will get a consistent answer: the washing machine supply hose. Not because it fails often — most last years — but because of what happens when it does.
Think about what that hose is doing. It sits under full household water pressure twenty-four hours a day, whether or not the machine is running. It is usually in a laundry room, a closet or a garage, behind an appliance nobody moves. And it is frequently rubber, which perishes.
When one bursts, it does not drip. It delivers water at full supply pressure into a room, continuously, until somebody shuts the main. If that happens while you are at work or away for a weekend, the outcome is not a repair — it is a restoration project.
Go and look at yours right now
This takes two minutes and it is the whole point of this article. Pull the machine out far enough to see the two hoses at the back and check for these:
- Bulging or swelling anywhere along the hose, particularly near the fittings. A bulge is a failure in progress.
- Cracking or crazing in the rubber, especially at the bends. Rubber gets brittle with age and heat.
- Rust or mineral crust at the connections, which indicates a slow weep that has been going on quietly.
- Any dampness on the floor, the wall, or the back of the machine.
- Kinks, or a hose crushed against the wall because the machine was pushed back too far. A kink concentrates stress in one spot.
- Age. If you cannot remember replacing them and you have been in the house more than five years, they are old enough to think about.
While you are back there, check that the shutoff valves actually turn. A surprising number are seized solid, which means that during an actual failure your only option is the main shutoff at the street.
What to replace them with
Braided stainless steel hoses. They cost a small amount more than rubber, they are far more resistant to bursting, and they are the standard recommendation for good reason. This is one of the cheapest meaningful upgrades available to a homeowner.
A few practical notes when fitting them. Do not over-tighten — hand tight plus a modest turn with pliers is right, and cranking on the fitting can crack it or distort the washer. Leave enough slack that the hose is not under tension when the machine sits in place, and make sure it is not kinked against the wall. And check the rubber washer inside each fitting is seated properly before you tighten.
The same principle applies elsewhere
Washing machine hoses get the attention because the failures are dramatic, but the underlying issue — a flexible connector under constant pressure in a place nobody looks — applies in several other spots worth checking while you are in the mood.
- Refrigerator ice maker lines. Often plastic tubing running behind an appliance that never moves, and a slow leak there can rot a subfloor for months before anyone notices.
- Dishwasher supply and drain connections. Under the counter, out of sight, and a common source of cabinet base damage.
- Toilet supply lines. The braided connector between the wall stop and the tank. Cheap to replace and worth doing when they get old.
- Under-sink angle stops. Not a leak risk in themselves, but if they will not turn you have no way to isolate a fixture in an emergency.
Water pressure is the hidden factor
One thing worth understanding: hoses and connectors have a pressure rating, and running a house consistently above what residential plumbing is designed for shortens the life of every one of them. If you are replacing toilet fill valves regularly, hearing banging pipes when a faucet shuts off, or getting repeated small leaks in unrelated places, your static pressure is worth measuring.
A gauge that screws onto an exterior hose bib costs very little and takes a minute to read. If the number is high, a pressure reducing valve is the fix, and correcting it protects every connection in the house rather than one at a time.
If one has already failed
- Shut the water off — the valves behind the machine if you can reach them safely, the main at the house if you cannot.
- Kill power to the laundry area at the breaker if water has reached outlets or the machine itself.
- Photograph everything before you start cleaning up. Insurers want to see it.
- Get water out and air moving fast. Water damage becomes mould damage on a timescale of days, not weeks.
- Call your insurer. Sudden and accidental water damage is commonly covered even where gradual leaks are not.
