Waiting for Hot Water? What a Recirculation Pump Actually Does
Standing at a tap waiting for hot water is wasted water and wasted time. Recirculation is one fix and it is not always the right one.

In a larger home, the bathroom farthest from the water heater can take a long time to deliver hot water. All of that is cold water going down the drain while you wait.
Why the wait happens
The hot water in the pipe between the heater and the tap cooled down since the last use. You have to push all of it out before hot water arrives.
The longer the run and the larger the pipe diameter, the more water sits in it and the longer the wait. That is the whole mechanism.
What recirculation does
A recirculation system keeps hot water moving through the supply loop so it is already hot at or near the fixture.
Dedicated return loop
A separate return pipe from the far end of the system back to the heater, with a pump circulating water around it. The best performance, and it needs that return line — straightforward in new construction, more involved as a retrofit.
Comfort systems using the cold line
A retrofit approach that uses the cold water line as the return, with a valve at the far fixture. No new pipe. The trade-off is that the cold line runs warm for a period after circulation, which some people find annoying.
The costs nobody mentions
- **Energy.** Keeping water hot in the pipes means losing heat from the pipes continuously. That is real, and it is the main argument against running one on a timer-free basis.
- **Wear.** Constant circulation moves water through the heater and the pipework more than a normal duty cycle would.
- **On a tankless heater**, recirculation needs specific compatibility. Not every tankless unit handles it well, and some require a buffer tank or a model designed for it.
Cheaper things to try first
- **Insulate the hot water pipes**, particularly any accessible run through an attic. This reduces standing heat loss and shortens the wait meaningfully for very little money.
- **Check the heater's temperature setting.** Set too low, everything downstream suffers.
- **Look at the fixture.** A low-flow aerator makes the wait longer because it takes more time to push the cooled water out.
- **Consider a point-of-use heater** at a single far fixture. Sometimes cheaper and simpler than a whole recirculation system for one problem bathroom.
If it is not distance
