Your Thermostat Might Be in the Wrong Place

If one part of the house is always wrong, the thermostat's location is worth checking before anyone touches the equipment.

A thermostat controls the whole system based on the temperature of the air immediately around it. If that air is not representative of the house, the whole house is controlled wrongly.

Bad locations

  • **In direct sunlight**, even for part of the day. The thermostat reads warm, the system overcools the rest of the house, and it is worse in the afternoon.
  • **On an exterior wall**, which runs closer to outdoor temperature than the room does.
  • **Near a supply register**, so it reads the conditioned air rather than the room.
  • **In a hallway with no supply of its own**, which is a genuinely common builder choice and reads nothing useful.
  • **Above or near a heat source** — a lamp, a television, a kitchen.
  • **Near an exterior door**, where every opening skews it.
  • **In a rarely used room** whose temperature does not represent where people are.
  • **Behind a door or furniture**, where air does not circulate past it.

Where it should be

On an interior wall, roughly five feet up, in a room the household actually occupies, with free air circulation and away from direct sun, registers and heat sources.

How to test the current location

  1. Put a separate thermometer next to the thermostat and another in the room where comfort matters most.
  2. Compare over a day, including afternoon.
  3. A consistent gap means the thermostat is reading air that is not representative.
  4. Watch whether the gap changes with sun angle — that identifies solar gain as the cause.

Fixes, cheapest first

  • **Block the sun.** A blind or a curtain on the window that hits it can be the entire fix.
  • **Move the heat source**, if there is a lamp or a device beside it.
  • **Add a remote sensor.** Many modern thermostats support one, so the system controls from the sensor's location rather than the thermostat's. This is often the best answer because it avoids rewiring.
  • **Relocate the thermostat**, which means running new low-voltage wire and patching drywall — more work, and correct where the location is genuinely wrong.
