Closing Vents in Unused Rooms Does Not Save Money — It Costs You

It feels obviously correct: stop cooling rooms nobody uses. What actually happens is that your blower fights a system it can no longer push air through.

It is the most intuitive energy-saving idea in home ownership. You have a guest room nobody uses. Close the register, stop conditioning it, save money. Everyone has heard it and a lot of people do it.

It does not work, and in most systems it makes things measurably worse. The reason comes down to how a forced-air system actually behaves when you restrict it.

What actually happens

Your blower is designed to move a specific volume of air against a specific amount of resistance. It does not sense a closed register and decide to work less. It keeps trying to move the same air through a smaller total opening.

The result is higher static pressure in the duct system, and a cascade of consequences that all cost money:

  • Total airflow falls. The blower cannot overcome the added resistance, so less air moves overall — including to the rooms you actually use.
  • The blower works harder. It draws more current, runs hotter, and wears faster. Any electricity you saved on cooling, you are now spending on the blower.
  • Duct leakage increases. Higher pressure inside the ducts pushes more conditioned air out through every existing leak — and in North Texas those leaks are in a blistering attic. You are now paying to cool the attic more than you were before.
  • The evaporator coil can freeze. Less air across the coil means the refrigerant does not absorb enough heat, the coil drops below freezing, and ice forms. Eventually airflow stops entirely.
  • A furnace can overheat. Restricted airflow across a heat exchanger trips the high limit, so the furnace short cycles — and repeated overheating shortens heat exchanger life, which is the expensive part of a furnace.

The closed room does not even stay comfortable. It still loses heat to the outdoors and gains heat through the ceiling from the attic, so it drifts to an extreme — and in a humid summer, a closed-off room with no air movement is exactly where condensation and mould problems develop.

The one honest exception

Closing one register in a large system, briefly, to nudge airflow toward a room that runs warm is a minor adjustment and it is fine. What causes problems is closing several, or closing them permanently.

A useful rule of thumb: if you are closing more than about one in ten registers, or your system already has restrictive ductwork, you are into the territory described above. And if you have no idea what your static pressure is, you have no idea how much headroom you have.

What to do instead

Zoning, if the layout justifies it

A proper zoning system uses motorised dampers in the ductwork plus a bypass or a variable-speed blower, so the system genuinely adjusts its output rather than simply being restricted. It is engineered to do what closing vents pretends to do. It costs real money and it is worth it in the right house — typically two-story homes or houses with wings used on different schedules.

A mini split for genuinely separate spaces

For a space that is truly used on a different schedule — a home office, a guest suite, a garage — a ductless mini split gives it independent control without touching the main system at all. That is the correct way to condition one space differently.

Fix the leaks and the returns

This is where the real money is. Sealing duct leaks with mastic and adding return air capacity where it is short reduce your bills without any of the downsides, and they improve comfort in the rooms you use. In this region, where ducts run through extreme attic temperatures, duct sealing produces a bigger improvement than it would almost anywhere else.

Use the thermostat properly

Setting the whole house back while nobody is home saves considerably more than closing vents ever could, and it has no side effects. In a long cooling season that adds up.

Address the envelope

Attic insulation and air sealing reduce the load on the whole system permanently. It is unglamorous and it is frequently the highest-return improvement available on an older North Texas house.

The related myth

While we are here: closing interior doors has a similar effect on a smaller scale. In a house with a single central return, a closed bedroom door pressurises that room and starves the return, which unbalances the system and pushes conditioned air out through the building envelope.

If bedroom doors are routinely closed — and in most households they are — the fix is transfer grilles, jump ducts, or undercut doors so air has a path back to the return. It is a small job and it noticeably improves comfort in bedrooms that never quite match the rest of the house.

What if I only close one or two vents?

One or two in a reasonably sized system is generally tolerable, particularly as a temporary adjustment. The problems scale with how much of the supply you close off and with how restrictive your ductwork already is. If your system is already running near its static pressure limit — which many are — even a small restriction matters. The measurement tells you where you stand.

My builder installed dampers in the ducts. Is that different?

Balancing dampers in the trunk and branch lines are a legitimate part of duct design and they are meant to be adjusted during commissioning to balance airflow between rooms. That is different from closing registers at the grille. Proper balancing distributes air correctly across the whole system rather than blocking part of it, and it should be set by someone measuring airflow.

Does closing a vent in an unused room risk mould?

In our humidity it is a genuine consideration. A closed-off room with no air movement can hold higher humidity, and in summer that combination on cool surfaces produces condensation. If you have a room that is genuinely unused, leaving the register open and the door ajar costs very little and avoids the problem.

Is zoning worth the cost?

In the right house, yes — typically two-story homes where upstairs and downstairs have genuinely different loads, or houses with a wing used on a different schedule. It needs to be designed properly, with adequate bypass or variable-speed equipment, because a badly designed zoning system creates the same high static pressure problems as closing vents. It is not a retrofit to do cheaply.
