Watering Restrictions and What They Mean for Your Irrigation System
A restriction does not just limit watering. It changes run patterns in ways that reveal leaks, stuck valves and failed backflow assemblies.

Most cities across Rockwall, Collin, Hunt and Kaufman counties run some form of watering schedule, tightening it during dry summers. The rules differ city to city, and the one that applies to you is the one your provider publishes — that is the source worth checking rather than what a neighbour told you.
What is worth talking about here is what restrictions do to a system, because a schedule change is also a diagnostic opportunity.
Faults that only show up under restriction
A stuck zone valve
A valve that fails to close fully lets a zone weep continuously. Under normal watering nobody notices — the ground is wet anyway. Once watering is restricted to twice a week, a zone that stays damp between cycles is unmistakable, and it is usually the first time anybody sees the fault that has been running up the bill for months.
A cracked lateral
Same principle. Under a heavy schedule, everything is wet. Under a light one, the soft spot that never dries out stands out.
A failed backflow assembly
The assembly that keeps irrigation water from siphoning back into your drinking water. Texas requires testable assemblies to be tested, and check valves genuinely do fail. A leaking or continuously discharging assembly is both a waste and a real cross-connection concern rather than a paperwork issue.
A controller that ignores you
Controllers with a battery-backed program lose it when the battery dies and revert to a default that is often daily watering. Homeowners get a violation notice for a schedule they never set.
Getting more out of less water
- Water early. Between about 6pm and 10am is when evaporation is lowest, and most restriction schedules require it anyway.
- Run longer, less often. Deep infrequent watering drives roots down; frequent shallow watering keeps them at the surface where they dry out first.
- Check head alignment. A head watering the pavement is wasting its whole run, and in this clay it is also a slip hazard.
- Adjust for the season rather than setting once in April. Most controllers have a seasonal adjust percentage that takes ten seconds to change.
- Fix the leaks first. There is no point optimising a schedule on a system that is losing water continuously through a stuck valve.
Clay soil changes the arithmetic
North Texas clay absorbs water slowly and then holds it. Running a long cycle on clay produces runoff — the water leaves your yard down the street rather than soaking in — so a cycle-and-soak approach, splitting a long run into shorter blocks with gaps between, delivers substantially more water into the ground for the same total minutes.
There is a plumbing reason to care about this beyond the lawn. Expansive clay shrinks as it dries and swells as it wets, and that movement stresses foundations and under-slab plumbing. Consistent moderate soil moisture around a foundation is better for the house than a cycle of drought and flood, which is why foundation watering is a real practice here rather than a superstition.
