Emergency Heat Is Not a "Warmer" Setting — and It Is Expensive
The most expensive button on a heat pump thermostat, pressed most often by people trying to get warm faster. It does not work faster. It just costs more.

If you have a heat pump, your thermostat almost certainly has an emergency heat setting. A great many people assume it means something like turbo — a way to get the house warm faster on a cold morning. It does not, and using it that way is genuinely costly.
Emergency heat bypasses your heat pump entirely and runs the backup heat on its own. In most systems that backup is electric resistance heating — essentially a very large heating element. It is the least efficient way to heat a home, and it is meant as a fallback for when the heat pump has failed, not as a comfort setting.
Three terms worth separating
Heat pump mode
Normal operation. The compressor moves heat from outdoor air into your house. Because it is moving energy rather than creating it, it delivers considerably more heat per unit of electricity than resistance heating does. This is where you want to be for the great majority of a North Texas winter.
Auxiliary heat
Backup heat working alongside the heat pump. The thermostat brings it in automatically when the heat pump alone cannot keep up — during very cold weather, during a defrost cycle, or when recovering from a large temperature setback. This is designed behaviour and seeing the aux light occasionally on a cold morning is normal.
Emergency heat
Backup heat running instead of the heat pump. You select this manually. The compressor is locked out entirely. It is the right choice when the heat pump itself has failed — a dead compressor, an outdoor unit encased in ice, a reversing valve fault — and it is the wrong choice in every other circumstance.
Why the house feels cooler on a heat pump — and why that is fine
Anyone switching from a gas furnace notices this immediately. Heat pump supply air comes out of the register at a lower temperature than furnace air. It is comfortably above room temperature but below body temperature, so it can feel cool against your hand.
That is normal and it is not a fault. A heat pump warms a house by running longer and steadier rather than in short blasts of very hot air. The result at the thermostat is the same or better — steadier temperatures and fewer swings. But it is the single most common reason people reach for emergency heat, and it is the wrong response to a system working correctly.
The test that matters is whether the house reaches and holds its setpoint. If it does, the system is doing its job regardless of how the air feels at the vent.
The configuration error behind most complaints
Here is the thing homeowners are rarely told, and it is the most common heat pump problem we find in this area. Thermostat configuration determines when auxiliary heat engages, and it is very easy to get wrong.
- A conventional thermostat wired to a heat pump. It has no concept of a compressor lockout or staging, so backup heat runs when the heat pump alone would have been fine.
- An auxiliary heat lockout temperature set too high. Backup heat kicks in on a mild forty-degree day when the heat pump was perfectly capable.
- A large programmed setback. Recovering five or six degrees at once frequently triggers auxiliary heat during the entire recovery — which can cost more than never setting back at all.
- The reversing valve orientation set wrong in the configuration menu, which produces genuinely strange behaviour.
Every one of those produces the same symptom: an electricity bill nobody can explain, with a system that appears to be working. The homeowner assumes the equipment is inefficient. It is a settings screen.
What to do this winter
- Confirm the thermostat is on normal heat, not emergency heat.
- Watch when the aux indicator comes on. Occasionally during genuinely cold weather or a defrost cycle is normal. Routinely on mild days is not.
- Use small setbacks rather than large ones — a couple of degrees rather than six. Heat pumps prefer steady operation.
- If your outdoor unit ices up and does not clear after a defrost cycle, that is a real fault. Switch to emergency heat and call, because running a heat pump with a failed defrost damages it.
- If you cannot work out why aux heat runs so often, have the thermostat configuration checked against the equipment. It is a short visit and it frequently pays for itself in one billing cycle.
The North Texas context
Our climate suits heat pumps unusually well. The heating season is short and mild, and heat pumps are at their most efficient in exactly the temperature range we spend most of the winter in. The handful of genuinely severe days each year are what backup heat exists for.

Will emergency heat warm my house faster?
Not meaningfully, and that is the misconception worth clearing up. Emergency heat runs your backup heating alone rather than in addition to the heat pump, so in most cases you are running less total heating capacity, not more, and paying considerably more per unit of heat. If you want the house warmer, raise the setpoint on normal heat and let the system work.
Is it bad to leave the thermostat on emergency heat?
It will not damage anything, but it is expensive. Electric resistance heat costs substantially more to run than heat pump heat for the same result, so a season spent on emergency heat shows up clearly on your bills. It also means that if the heat pump does develop a fault you will not notice, because it has not been running.
My aux heat light comes on every morning. Is that normal?
It depends on the conditions and on your thermostat settings. On a genuinely cold morning, or when recovering from an overnight setback, some auxiliary heat is expected. Every morning regardless of outdoor temperature suggests the lockout is set too high or the setback is too aggressive. Reducing the overnight setback to a couple of degrees is the first thing to try, and having the configuration checked is the second.
