Banging Pipes: What Water Hammer Is and Why It Breaks Things
A bang in the wall when an appliance shuts off is a shock wave hitting a dead end. It is fixable, and worth fixing.

You hear it when the washing machine finishes filling, or when someone shuts a faucet quickly, or every time the ice maker takes a drink. A single hard bang, or a rattle that runs along a wall like something loose is rolling down it. That is water hammer, and it is not a cosmetic annoyance. It is a pressure spike, and pressure spikes break things.
What is actually happening
Water in your pipes has mass and it is moving. When a valve closes quickly — and solenoid valves in appliances close very quickly — that moving column of water has to stop essentially instantly. It cannot compress, so the energy goes somewhere else. It converts into a pressure wave that slams into the closed valve and then travels back up the pipe, bouncing until it dissipates.
The bang you hear is that wave hitting a dead end and shaking the pipe against framing. The spike itself can be several times your normal static pressure for a fraction of a second. Do that a few thousand times a year and it works on solder joints, threaded connections, appliance valves, and the crimp rings on flexible supply lines.
Why it matters more than it sounds
- Repeated spikes loosen joints. A joint that seeps rather than sprays can run for a long time inside a wall before anyone notices.
- It is hard on appliance inlet valves — the washer and dishwasher valves that are already the fastest-closing ones in the house.
- It shortens the life of braided supply lines, which are the single most common source of catastrophic indoor water damage.
- On older systems it can crack fittings outright rather than just loosening them.
The first thing to check: your static pressure
Most municipal supply in the Dallas metro arrives at the house well above what residential plumbing wants to see day to day. That is what the pressure reducing valve at the service entry is for. When that regulator drifts or fails, house pressure climbs, and high pressure makes every hammer event worse because there is more energy in the moving column to begin with.
A pressure gauge that threads onto a hose bib costs very little and tells you a great deal. If the reading is high, or if it climbs on its own while no water is running, the regulator is the problem and it needs attention before anything else. Chasing hammer noise on a system with a failed regulator is treating the symptom.
Arrestors, and why the old air chambers stopped working
Older houses were plumbed with air chambers — capped vertical stubs of pipe near fixtures, meant to hold a pocket of air that could compress and absorb the shock. They work, briefly. Over time the air dissolves into the water and the chamber fills, leaving a plain dead-end pipe with no cushion. That is why a house that never banged for fifteen years suddenly starts.
You can sometimes recharge them: shut off the main, open the highest and lowest faucets in the house to drain the lines and let air back into the chambers, then close the faucets and turn the water back on. If the banging stops and stays gone for a year or more, you had air chambers and they were waterlogged. If it comes back within weeks, they are compromised and the real fix is different.
Mechanical arrestors
A proper water hammer arrestor is a sealed device with a piston or bellows separating the water from a permanently trapped gas charge. Because the gas cannot dissolve into the water, it does not waterlog the way an air chamber does. They are installed close to the offending valve — at the washer box, behind the dishwasher, near the ice maker line — because a shock absorber does the most good nearest the source of the shock.
This is the durable fix for appliance-driven hammer, and on most houses it is a modest job. The washer box is usually the highest-value single location because that valve closes hardest and the machine cycles many times a week.
When it is not hammer at all
Not every noise in a wall is a pressure wave, and the distinction changes the fix.
Loose pipe against framing
A rattle or knock that happens while water is running, rather than a single bang at shutoff, is often just pipe moving in an oversized hole or a missing strap. Securing and cushioning it where it passes through framing solves it. This is common in houses where the pipe was run before the insulation and nobody came back to strap it properly.
Thermal expansion ticking
A ticking or clicking that follows hot water use is copper expanding as it heats and sliding against a joist or a strap. Harmless, and usually not worth opening a wall to chase.
A failing fill valve
A shuddering or moaning noise from a toilet as it refills is usually the fill valve itself, not the pipes. Replacing it is inexpensive and takes minutes.
What we do on a hammer call
- Test static pressure at a hose bib and watch whether it climbs with no flow, which points at the regulator or a thermal expansion problem.
- Identify which fixtures and appliances trigger the noise, because that locates where an arrestor belongs.
- Check whether the house has an expansion tank and whether it is still charged, since a failed one shows up as pressure that creeps upward.
- Look at accessible pipe runs for missing straps and unsupported spans.
- Fix the pressure problem first if there is one, then install arrestors where they will do the most good.
Order matters there. Installing arrestors on a system running high pressure quiets the noise and leaves the underlying stress in place. Getting pressure into a sane range often reduces the hammer on its own and makes the arrestors far more effective.

Is water hammer dangerous or just annoying?
It is a real mechanical stress, not just noise. Each bang is a pressure spike well above your normal operating pressure. Over time it loosens joints, shortens the life of appliance inlet valves, and is hard on braided supply lines — which are a leading cause of major indoor water damage. It is worth fixing.
Why did my pipes suddenly start banging after years of quiet?
Usually one of two things. The old air chambers built into the plumbing have slowly waterlogged and lost their air cushion, or your house pressure has risen because the pressure reducing valve is failing. Both are common, and the second one is worth ruling out first because it affects the whole system.
Can I install a water hammer arrestor myself?
At a washing machine box with accessible screw-on connections, a handy homeowner often can. Anywhere it requires opening a wall, cutting into supply lines, or soldering, it is a job for a licensed plumber. And if the underlying issue is house pressure, an arrestor alone will not solve it.
