Your Outdoor AC Unit Is Choking on Cottonwood and Grass Clippings
The outdoor unit rejects heat by pulling air across a coil. Block that coil with cottonwood, grass clippings and dust, and the whole system loses capacity.

The outdoor half of your air conditioner has one job: get rid of the heat the system pulled out of your house. It does that by pulling outdoor air across a coil wrapped around the outside of the unit. That is the whole mechanism.
Anything that blocks that coil reduces how much heat can leave. Reduce it enough and the system loses capacity, runs longer, works harder, and eventually stops keeping up on the hottest afternoons — which is exactly when you notice.
In North Texas the coil gets a lot thrown at it. Cottonwood seed in late spring, grass clippings from every mow, dust through a dry summer, and pollen most of the year. It is one of the few genuinely useful things a homeowner can do without tools.
The signs you have a blocked coil
- The system runs constantly on hot afternoons and never quite reaches setpoint, though it manages fine in the mornings.
- The outdoor unit feels unusually hot and the air coming off the top is very hot rather than warm.
- You can see visible debris matted against the fins, or a grey mat of cottonwood across one side.
- Bills climbed this summer with no change in how you use the house.
- The system is short cycling or tripping on a high-pressure fault, which is what a badly blocked coil eventually produces.
One useful check: look at the unit from all four sides. It is common for one face — usually the one nearest a fence, a hedge or a lawn you mow in a particular direction — to be far worse than the others.
How to clean it safely
This is a reasonable homeowner job if you are comfortable and careful. If you are not, it is part of every cooling tune-up we do.
- Turn the system off at the thermostat, then shut off the outdoor disconnect — the box on the wall near the unit — or the breaker. Do not skip this. The fan can start without warning.
- Clear anything within a couple of feet of the unit. Weeds, stored items, an overgrown shrub. The unit needs unobstructed air on all sides.
- Brush the loose debris off the fins with a soft brush, working in the direction of the fins rather than across them. The fins are thin aluminium and they bend easily.
- Rinse with a regular garden hose from the inside out where you can reach, or gently from the outside in. Low pressure. The goal is to float debris out, not blast it in.
- Let it dry, restore power, and run the system. It should sound and feel different.
Things people get wrong
- Covering the unit in winter. A full cover traps moisture and gives rodents somewhere sheltered to nest and chew wiring. If you cover anything, cover only the top to keep leaves out, and leave the sides open.
- Planting too close. Shrubs and hedges look better than a bare condenser, but they need real clearance. A couple of feet on all sides and several feet above is the sensible minimum.
- Mowing toward the unit. Grass clippings blown into a coil are one of the most common causes of blockage, and it is entirely avoidable by mowing in the other direction.
- Using strong coil cleaner without knowing what it is. Some chemical cleaners are aggressive toward aluminium fins. Plain water handles the great majority of residential coil cleaning.
- Straightening bent fins with a screwdriver. A fin comb is the correct tool and it is inexpensive. A screwdriver punctures the coil, which is a refrigerant leak.
When it needs more than a rinse
A garden hose removes surface debris. What it does not remove is the layer that has worked its way deep into the coil over several years — that requires a proper chemical cleaning with the right product and, on badly fouled units, cleaning from the inside out with the top removed.
You can usually tell. If you rinse it and it still looks grey and matted between the fins, or if the system's performance does not change, the fouling is deeper than the surface. That is a service visit rather than a Saturday.
The same visit should include the things you cannot check from outside: refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, capacitor value against its rating, contactor condition, and amp draw on the compressor and fan motor. Those readings tell you whether the coil was the whole problem or just part of it.
The seasonal rhythm that works here
- Late spring, after cottonwood season: clear the unit and rinse the coil. This is the important one in this region.
- Every mow: check that clippings have not been blown into the fins.
- Mid-summer: a second rinse if the unit sits near a road, a field or anywhere dusty.
- Autumn: clear leaves from around and on top of the unit before they mat down.
- Any time: keep two feet of clear space around it, permanently.

Does shading the outdoor unit help efficiency?
Modestly, and only if you do it without restricting airflow. A unit in shade rejects heat slightly more easily than one baking in full sun. But airflow matters far more than shade, so a shrub planted close enough to block air makes things worse overall. If you want to shade it, do so from several feet away and keep every side clear.
The fins on my unit are bent. Does that matter?
A few bent fins are cosmetic. Large flattened areas genuinely restrict airflow and reduce capacity. They can be combed back with a fin comb — an inexpensive tool made for exactly this. Do not use a screwdriver or a knife; puncturing the coil creates a refrigerant leak, which turns a minor issue into an expensive one.
