A dual fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating down to a set outdoor temperature, and below that the furnace takes over.
The idea is to use whichever is cheaper to run at any given outdoor temperature.
Why it suits this climate
North Texas winters are mostly mild with short spells of genuinely cold weather. A heat pump is efficient in mild conditions and loses efficiency as it gets colder. Gas heat does not care how cold it is outside.
So the profile here — many mild hours, few very cold ones — is close to the ideal case for switching between the two.
How the switchover works
A control sets a balance point, an outdoor temperature below which the furnace runs instead of the heat pump. Above it, the heat pump. Below it, the furnace.
That balance point should be set from your actual gas and electricity rates and your equipment, not left at a factory default. A wrongly set balance point either wastes gas or runs the heat pump in conditions where it costs more.
When it makes sense
- You have gas service already.
- You are replacing both the heating and cooling equipment at the same time, so the incremental cost is the smaller part.
- Your electricity rates make heat pump operation attractive in mild weather.
- You want the redundancy of two heat sources.
When it does not
- No gas service. Then the choice is a heat pump with electric backup, or all-electric.
- You are only replacing one side of the system.
- The existing ductwork is inadequate — fixing that comes first regardless of equipment choice.
- The price difference is not justified by your actual usage. Ask for the maths on your rates rather than a general claim.
What to ask for in a quote
- The balance point they intend to set and why.
- The efficiency ratings for both the heat pump and the furnace.
- Whether your ductwork is adequate for the equipment proposed.
- How the thermostat will control the switchover.
- What the maintenance requirement looks like for two pieces of equipment.
- Warranty terms on both.
