No Heat on the First Cold Night? Check the Flame Sensor

A furnace that lights briefly then shuts down, over and over, is usually telling you one specific thing.

The classic pattern: the furnace fires up, you hear it light, it runs for a few seconds, then shuts off. A moment later it tries again. Same result.

That sequence points strongly at the flame sensor.

What it does

The flame sensor is a thin metal rod sitting in the burner flame. It confirms to the control board that a flame is actually present.

It is a safety device. If the board cannot confirm flame, it shuts the gas valve — because gas flowing with no flame is the thing that must never happen.

Why it fails

It does not usually break. It gets dirty. A film of oxidation and combustion residue builds on the rod over seasons, and eventually the sensor cannot detect the flame reliably even though the flame is there.

The board does exactly what it should — sees no flame, shuts down. The furnace is failing safe.

Why it shows up on the first cold night

In North Texas the heating season is short. A furnace can sit unused for months, then get asked to run hard on the first genuinely cold evening.

Other causes of the same symptom

  • A dirty or failing igniter.
  • A gas supply or valve problem.
  • A blocked flue or combustion air restriction — which is a safety matter.
  • A pressure switch fault, often caused by a blocked condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace.
  • A control board fault.
  • A grounding problem, which the sensor depends on.

A technician distinguishes these quickly. Guessing at them is how people replace parts that were fine.

Repeatedly cycling a furnace that will not stay lit is not a good idea. Each attempt opens the gas valve briefly.
