Furnace Blowing Cold Air? The Usual Causes, in Order

A furnace that blows but never gets warm is usually failing to light, not failing to run. Here is how we narrow it down, fastest cause first.

When a furnace blows cold, the blower is usually working fine. That part is easy. The problem is almost always upstream of the blower: the burners never lit, or they lit and shut back down before the heat exchanger got warm. Air still moves. It is just room-temperature air moving through a cold box.

North Texas makes this worse than it sounds. Our furnaces sit idle most of the year, then get asked to run hard the first cold night in November or during a hard freeze. Components that were quietly failing all summer pick that exact night to quit. Here is the order we work through it.

First: is the thermostat set to run the fan constantly?

This one is embarrassing to discover on a service call, so check it before you call anyone. If your fan setting is on ON instead of AUTO, the blower runs continuously whether or not the furnace is heating. Between burn cycles you get cold air out of the vents, and it feels exactly like a broken furnace.

Set the fan to AUTO. If the air comes out warm on a call for heat and the blower stops when the call ends, nothing is wrong. If the blower still runs cold, keep reading.

The igniter has cracked

Most furnaces built in the last twenty-five years use a hot surface igniter — a thin silicon carbide or silicon nitride element that glows orange and lights the gas. It is brittle. It ages every time it heats and cools, and eventually it cracks and stops glowing. This is the single most common no-heat call we run.

You can often see it happen. Pull the burner door with the power off, then watch through the sight glass on a call for heat. You should see the inducer motor spin up, then a bright orange glow for several seconds, then flame. No glow means no ignition, and nothing downstream will happen.

Do not touch the igniter with bare fingers even to inspect it. Skin oil creates a hot spot and shortens the life of a new one. It is a small part and a quick replacement for a tech who has the right one on the truck.

The flame sensor is dirty

This is the classic short-cycle symptom, and it is worth knowing because it fools people into thinking the furnace is dying. The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits in the flame and confirms to the control board that gas is actually burning. If the board does not get that confirmation within a few seconds, it shuts the gas valve as a safety measure.

A sensor coated in oxidation cannot read the flame. So the furnace lights, runs four or five seconds, and shuts off. Then it tries again. After three or four failed attempts the board locks out entirely and you get nothing but blower air. If your furnace lights and immediately quits, over and over, this is the first thing to suspect.

It is a cleaning, not a replacement, and it is the reason a fall tune-up pays for itself more often than people expect.

Airflow is choked and the limit switch is tripping

A furnace needs a specific volume of air across the heat exchanger to carry heat away. Starve it and the exchanger overheats, the high-limit switch opens, and the gas valve closes while the blower keeps running to cool things down. Result: warm air for a few minutes, then cold air, on repeat.

The usual culprits, in the order we find them:

  • A filter that has not been changed in months. This is the most common cause by a wide margin.
  • Supply or return vents blocked by furniture, rugs, or closed registers in unused rooms.
  • A collapsed or disconnected flex duct in the attic — common in DFW homes where everything lives up there.
  • An undersized return, which is a design problem rather than a maintenance one.
  • A blower wheel packed with dust, which quietly cuts airflow year after year.

A limit switch that trips repeatedly is not the failure. It is the safety doing its job because something else is wrong. Replacing the switch without finding the airflow restriction is how heat exchangers get cracked.

Condensate is backed up on a high-efficiency unit

If you have a 90-plus percent furnace with PVC venting, it produces condensate when it runs. That water drains through a trap and out a line. Most of these furnaces have a pressure switch or float that will not let the burners fire if condensate cannot drain.

In our climate that line often shares a path with the AC condensate drain, and after a long cooling season it is full of algae and slime. The furnace fires up the first cold week and immediately locks out on a blocked drain. It looks like a heating problem. It is really a leftover summer problem.

Gas supply, or the furnace is locked out

Check that other gas appliances work. If your range and water heater are fine, gas is reaching the house. If nothing gas-fired works, the issue is at the meter or the main valve, not the furnace.

Many furnaces will also enter a hard lockout after several failed ignition attempts and stay there until power is cycled. Switching the furnace off at the service switch for thirty seconds and back on will clear it. Do that once. If it locks out again, the underlying fault is still there and you need it diagnosed rather than reset.

What a real diagnosis should look like

A tech should be reading the flash code on the control board, checking flame signal in microamps, verifying gas pressure with a manometer, and measuring temperature rise across the unit against the range on the nameplate. Those numbers tell you what actually failed.

Be cautious with anyone who quotes a full system replacement before measuring airflow or pulling a flash code. Sometimes replacement genuinely is the right answer, especially on an older unit with a cracked heat exchanger. But that is a conclusion you reach with instruments, not one you lead with.

On cost: an igniter or flame sensor is at the low end of repair pricing, a blower motor or control board sits considerably higher, and a full replacement is a different conversation entirely. What drives the number is the part itself, whether it is a proprietary board, how accessible the unit is, and whether the repair is one item or a symptom of a failing system. What you can safely check yourself

  1. Set the thermostat fan to AUTO and confirm it is calling for heat above room temperature.
  2. Replace the air filter if you cannot remember the last time you did.
  3. Open every supply and return register and move anything blocking them.
  4. Confirm the furnace service switch is on and the breaker has not tripped.
  5. Make sure the burner compartment door is fully seated — a door switch will prevent operation if it is not.
  6. Look for a blinking LED on the control board and write down the pattern before cycling power.

When to stop and call

  • Any smell of gas, at any point.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm sounding — leave the house and call from outside.
  • Burner flames that are yellow, lazy, or rolling out of the burner box instead of pulling in.
  • A furnace that lights and shuts off repeatedly, then locks out.
  • Soot, scorching, or rust flakes around the burners or vent pipe.
  • Water pooling around the base of a high-efficiency unit.

Why does my furnace light and then shut off after a few seconds?

That pattern almost always points to the flame sensor. If the control board cannot confirm a flame within a few seconds of the gas valve opening, it shuts the gas off as a safety measure. A dirty sensor is a cleaning rather than a replacement. Less commonly it is a grounding issue or a gas pressure problem, which is why we verify with a flame signal reading instead of just cleaning and hoping.

Can a dirty air filter really keep my furnace from heating?

Yes, and it is one of the most common causes we see. A restricted filter starves the heat exchanger of airflow, the unit overheats, and the high-limit switch cuts the burners while the blower keeps running. You get cold air out of the vents. In our dusty North Texas seasons a one-inch filter often needs changing every one to three months.

Is it safe to keep running a furnace that blows cold air?

If it is simply not lighting, it is not dangerous, just useless. But if you notice a gas smell, a CO alarm, soot or scorch marks near the burners, or anyone in the house feeling sick indoors and better outdoors, shut the system off and get everyone outside before calling. Repeated overheating and lockout cycles are also hard on a heat exchanger, which is the part you never want to crack.
