What Every HVAC Noise Actually Means

Your system makes a specific noise for a specific reason. Two of the sounds on this list mean turn it off right now; most of the others are cheap repairs caught early.

A heating and cooling system makes a consistent set of sounds when it is working. When a new one appears, it is information — and most of the time it is information about a small problem that is cheap to fix now and expensive to fix later.

Two of the sounds below mean shut the system off immediately. The rest are worth diagnosing without panic.

Sounds that mean shut it off now

Any hissing near a gas furnace, plus a smell of gas

Leave the house. Do not flip switches, do not use your phone indoors, do not start a car in an attached garage. Call the gas utility from outside, then call us. This is the one item on the page with no nuance attached to it.

A loud metallic grinding or screeching from the outdoor unit

Usually a compressor or fan motor bearing failing, or a fan blade striking something. Continuing to run it turns a motor replacement into a compressor replacement. Shut it off at the thermostat and the disconnect.

Cooling season sounds

A loud hum from the outdoor unit with the fan not turning

Classic failed capacitor. The motor is receiving power and cannot start. It is one of the least expensive repairs in the trade — and running the system in that state cooks the motor, which turns it into one of the more expensive ones. Shut it off and call.

Rapid clicking on startup

A relay or contactor chattering, or a control trying repeatedly to start something that will not start. Frequently the same capacitor story a stage earlier.

A single hard clunk when the system starts or stops

Often just a duct or plenum flexing under pressure change, which is harmless but can be quietened. If it is coming from the outdoor unit, it may be a compressor mount that has deteriorated.

Buzzing from the outdoor unit

Loose panels or hardware vibrating, debris caught against the fan, or an electrical component. Panels and debris are quick. Anything electrical is not a homeowner job — there is line voltage in that cabinet.

A gentle hissing from the indoor unit or refrigerant lines

Possibly a refrigerant leak. It should be diagnosed rather than topped up, because a sealed system does not consume refrigerant — if it is low, it leaked, and adding more without finding the leak means paying for it again next year.

Water dripping or trickling near the indoor unit

The condensate drain. In an attic installation this matters immediately, because the next stage is water in a ceiling. Shut the system off at the thermostat to stop it producing more water, and deal with the drain.

Heating season sounds

A boom or whump when the furnace lights

Delayed ignition — gas accumulating briefly before igniting, then lighting all at once. Usually dirty burners, a weak igniter, or a gas pressure problem. It is stressful for the heat exchanger and it should be addressed rather than lived with.

Repeated clicking with no ignition

The furnace attempting ignition and failing. Common causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, or a pressure switch reading a venting problem. A dirty flame sensor is one of the cheapest repairs there is and one of the most frequent.

Squealing from the indoor unit

Blower motor bearings, or on older equipment a belt. Catch it here and it is a motor or a belt. Ignore it and the blower seizes, which on a furnace also means overheating.

Rumbling that continues after the furnace shuts down

Burners not extinguishing cleanly. Worth a prompt look, because anything irregular in the combustion sequence is in safety territory.

Airflow sounds — the ones people ignore

Whistling at the registers

Air moving too fast through too small an opening. It means high static pressure — restricted or undersized ducts, a very dense filter, or closed registers elsewhere in the house. It is a comfort and efficiency problem, not just a noise.

A roar from the return grille

Almost always undersized return air. Extremely common in two-story homes here, where the upstairs return was sized to a rule of thumb rather than to the equipment. It is also the single most common cause of an upstairs that never matches downstairs.

A rattling or flapping in the ducts

A loose damper, a duct section that has come partly free of its support, or debris. Worth investigating, because a duct that is working loose eventually disconnects entirely — and then you are heating and cooling your attic.

A note on the sounds you cannot hear

Modern variable-speed equipment is quiet by design, and one consequence is that developing faults are less audible than they used to be. That is another argument for seasonal maintenance in this climate: a technician measuring capacitor values, motor amp draw and static pressure catches things your ears will not, and catches them in April rather than in July when the whole metro needs a technician at once.

My AC hums but the fan will not spin. Can I start it with a stick?

People do, and we would rather you did not. Nudging the fan blade to get a stalled motor turning confirms a failed capacitor, but it puts your hand near a fan that is about to start in a cabinet with line voltage in it. The diagnosis is not worth the risk when the symptom already tells you what it is. Shut it off and call — a capacitor is an inexpensive, quick repair.

Is it normal for the outdoor unit to make noise when it changes modes?

On a heat pump, yes. A whoosh or a soft thunk as the reversing valve shifts between heating and cooling is normal operation, and it also happens at the start and end of each defrost cycle in winter. What is not normal is banging, clanking, or a sustained shriek — those warrant a look.

Why is my system louder than it used to be?

Gradual increases usually mean airflow restriction building up — a dirtier filter, a fouling coil, a blower wheel accumulating dust — or hardware that has worked loose from vibration. Sudden increases point at a component. Either way, a system getting louder is telling you something changed, and it is cheaper to find out what while it is still just a noise.

Can I fix a rattling duct myself?

Sometimes, if it is accessible and it is simply a panel or a loose section that can be re-secured. Be cautious in an attic — falling through a ceiling is a real risk, and in a North Texas summer the heat up there is genuinely dangerous. If the duct has come loose from a plenum or a boot, it needs sealing with mastic rather than tape, because tape fails in attic heat within a few years.
