AC Turning On and Off Constantly: Short Cycling Explained
An AC that starts and stops every few minutes is not just annoying. It is a symptom, and the wrong fix will cost you a compressor.

Short cycling is what we call it when your air conditioner starts, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, and then starts again a few minutes later. Over and over. The house never really gets comfortable, the vents blow air that is only sort of cold, and the outdoor unit sounds like it can never make up its mind.
A healthy system in a North Texas July should run in long stretches. On a 100-degree afternoon, a properly sized unit might run close to continuously, and that is normal. It is the short, choppy cycles that tell you something is wrong.
The reason to take it seriously: every start is the hardest moment in a compressor's life. Startup draws several times the running current. A system cycling six or eight times an hour is aging its most expensive component fast.
First, rule out the easy stuff
Before anyone talks about refrigerant or compressors, two things get checked. Both are free and both are common.
- Pull the air filter and look at it. If light does not pass through it, that is your first suspect.
- Look at the return grille and make sure furniture, curtains, or a rug are not blocking it.
- Check that supply vents around the house are open, including in rooms nobody uses.
- Look at where your thermostat is mounted — sunlight, a lamp, a TV, or a nearby supply vent will make it read wrong.
A clogged filter starves the system of airflow. Less air across the indoor coil means the coil gets too cold, pressures drop, and a safety switch cuts the system off. It restarts once things warm up, then does it again. That loop is short cycling in its most fixable form.
A thermostat in a bad spot
Thermostats measure the air right in front of them and nothing else. Put one on a wall that catches afternoon sun through a west window and it will read four or five degrees warm, call for cooling, get hit with cold air, and satisfy almost immediately. Short cycle. We have solved this by relocating a thermostat maybe fifteen feet.
A frozen or dirty evaporator coil
The indoor coil is where heat actually leaves your air. When airflow across it drops — dirty filter, collapsed flex duct, blower running slow, a coil packed with dust — the coil surface drops below freezing and condensation turns to ice.
Once ice forms it insulates the coil, which makes the problem worse, which makes more ice. The system trips off on low pressure, thaws a bit, restarts, and repeats. If you look at the copper line at the outdoor unit and see frost on it, that is what is happening.
The right move is to turn the system to OFF and the fan to ON. That runs the blower without cooling and thaws the coil in a couple of hours. Then get the cause diagnosed, because ice is a symptom, not a fault.
Low refrigerant from an actual leak
A sealed refrigerant system does not consume refrigerant. If yours is low, it leaked. That is worth saying plainly, because low charge is one of the most common causes of short cycling and one of the most commonly mishandled.
When charge drops, suction pressure falls, and the low-pressure safety switch does its job and shuts the compressor down. Pressure creeps back up, the switch closes, the compressor restarts. Cycle after cycle.
Electrical faults: capacitor, contactor, control board
A weak run capacitor is the single most common electrical failure in Texas heat. A capacitor that is degraded but not dead will often let the compressor start, then let it stall out on thermal overload a few minutes later. The compressor cools down, tries again, stalls again.
A pitted contactor can do something similar, chattering open and closed. So can a failing control board or a loose low-voltage connection at the thermostat wire. These are all measurable — a tech with a meter finds them in minutes.
The system is simply too big for the house
This one frustrates people, because it means the equipment is working exactly as designed and still making the house uncomfortable.
An oversized air conditioner blasts the thermostat down to setpoint in a few minutes and shuts off. It never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air, so the house feels clammy at 74 degrees. Rooms far from the unit never catch up because the fan stops before air reaches them. And the compressor racks up start cycles all summer.
Oversizing usually traces back to equipment picked by the square foot instead of by a load calculation that accounts for windows, orientation, insulation, and duct condition. Two houses the same size in Rockwall can need noticeably different equipment depending on which way the glass faces.
If your system is oversized, you do not necessarily replace it tomorrow. Sometimes staging, a variable-speed blower, or fixing duct restrictions gets you most of the way there. But if you are already replacing the system, that is the moment to get the sizing right, and any crew that quotes a replacement without measuring airflow and running a load calculation is guessing.
What you can check before you call
- Replace the filter if it is dirty, then watch the system for a day.
- Look for ice on the indoor coil or on the copper line outside.
- Make sure the outdoor unit has clear space around it and the fins are not packed with grass clippings or cottonwood.
- Note how long it runs and how long it stays off — that timing tells a tech a lot.
- Check whether it started after a storm, a power blip, or a thermostat change.
If it is still cycling after a clean filter and a clear outdoor unit, stop running it. Every additional cycle is wear you cannot buy back, and if the cause is low charge, running it dry is how a compressor dies.
What a diagnosis actually costs
We will not quote you a number for a system we have not seen. What we can tell you is what drives it. A capacitor is one of the least expensive repairs on the system. A refrigerant leak repair depends entirely on where the leak is — a leaking service valve is straightforward, a leak inside the evaporator coil is a different conversation. Duct or airflow corrections vary with how much duct is involved and where it runs.

How many times per hour should my AC cycle?
Two to three cycles an hour is typical in mild weather, and each run should last roughly ten minutes or more. On a hot North Texas afternoon a correctly sized system may run nearly continuously, which is normal and efficient. Cycles of two to five minutes, repeating all day, mean something is wrong.
Can a dirty air filter really cause short cycling?
Yes, and it is the most common cause we find. A restricted filter cuts airflow across the indoor coil, the coil gets too cold and may ice over, and a safety switch shuts the system down. Change the filter, let any ice thaw with the fan running, and see whether the cycles lengthen before assuming a bigger problem.
Is short cycling damaging my air conditioner?
It is. Compressor startup draws far more current than normal running, so frequent starts generate heat and mechanical stress in the most expensive component you own. Short cycling also keeps humidity high indoors because the system never runs long enough to dehumidify. It is worth diagnosing quickly rather than living with it through summer.
