Polybutylene Pipe in North Texas Homes: How to Identify It and What to Do
If your home was built between the late 1970s and the mid 1990s, there is a real chance the supply lines are polybutylene — and it fails at the fittings, usually without warning.

There is a specific window of North Texas housing — roughly the late 1970s through the mid 1990s — where the supply plumbing deserves a look before anything goes wrong. That was the era of polybutylene, a grey plastic pipe that was inexpensive, easy to install, and widely used across the metro during a period of enormous growth. It was also, in hindsight, a material with a problem.
We are not here to alarm anyone. Plenty of polybutylene is still in service and holding. But it has a well-documented history of failing at the fittings, it tends to fail without warning rather than with a slow drip, and a number of insurers treat its presence as a known liability. If you have it, you want to know that on your own schedule rather than at two in the morning.
How to identify it in about five minutes
You do not need a plumber for this part. Polybutylene has a distinctive look and there are two or three places in almost any house where you can see supply pipe without opening anything.
- Colour: usually grey, though it was also produced in blue and black. The grey is the version most commonly found in North Texas homes.
- Texture: flexible plastic with a slightly dull, matte finish. It bends. Copper does not and CPVC is rigid and typically cream or off-white.
- Markings: look for "PB2110" stamped along the pipe. That code is the giveaway.
- Diameter: commonly half-inch or three-quarter-inch on residential supply runs.
Where to look: at the water heater connections, under bathroom and kitchen sinks where the supply comes out of the wall, at the main shutoff where the line enters the house, and anywhere pipe is visible in a garage or utility area. If every visible connection is copper, that is a good sign but not proof — some homes had copper stub-outs at fixtures with polybutylene running through the walls behind them.
Why it fails
The pipe itself is not usually the weak point. The failures concentrate at the fittings and at the connection between fitting and pipe. Early installations frequently used acetal plastic fittings with metal crimp rings, and the combination of chlorine in treated municipal water, water pressure, and time degrades those connections from the inside.
What makes it different from other aging plumbing is the failure mode. Copper generally announces itself — a pinhole starts weeping, you get a stain, you have time. A polybutylene fitting failure tends to be sudden and full-volume. That is why the damage from one is frequently out of proportion to the size of the repair.
North Texas adds two accelerants. Our water pressure in many areas runs at the high end of what residential systems are designed for, and pressure is hard on any marginal connection. Monitor it
A legitimate choice if the system has been trouble-free, you have found no signs of degradation, and your budget does not currently allow more. Monitoring means something specific though: knowing where your shutoff is, checking visible fittings periodically for discolouration or mineral crust, keeping your water pressure in range, and treating any unexplained damp spot as urgent rather than curious.
Repair as it fails
Honestly, this is the option we would steer people away from in most cases. Each individual repair is reasonable, but with polybutylene the failures cluster once they start, and you end up paying repeatedly while absorbing water damage each time. Add up what three repairs plus three insurance deductibles plus three rounds of drywall and flooring cost and compare that to a planned repipe.
Repipe
Replacing the supply system, typically with PEX, run through walls and attic rather than under the slab. It is the permanent answer, and doing it on your schedule is considerably cheaper and less disruptive than doing it after a failure has already soaked the house. Water stays on overnight through the work, and most families do not move out.
The insurance and resale angle
Two practical things worth knowing. Some carriers ask about polybutylene at policy time and some treat it as a factor in coverage or premium — it is worth reading your policy and asking directly rather than discovering the answer during a claim. And it shows up in home sales. An inspector will identify it, buyers routinely ask for a credit or a replacement, and it becomes a negotiating point at exactly the moment you have the least leverage.
Neither of those is a reason to panic. Both are reasons to know what you have.

Is polybutylene pipe banned?
It is no longer manufactured for potable water supply in the United States and is not used in new construction, but there is no requirement to remove existing installations. Plenty of it remains in service across North Texas. The practical situation is that it is a legacy material with a known failure pattern rather than an illegal one.
How much of my house needs repiping if I have polybutylene?
Usually the whole supply system, because the fittings throughout share the same age and the same exposure. Occasionally a home was partially converted by a previous owner and only one section remains, which makes for a smaller job. We establish which situation you are in before quoting, and a partial repipe is a legitimate outcome when it genuinely addresses the risk.
Will PEX have the same problem?
Modern PEX is a different material with a different fitting system and a strong track record. It is flexible like polybutylene, which is why some homeowners confuse the two, but the chemistry and the connections are not comparable. It also handles freeze events better than rigid pipe, which matters here. That said, any system installed badly will have problems — the install quality matters as much as the material.
