Power Surges and Your HVAC: Why a Compressor Dies After a Storm
An air conditioner that stopped working the morning after a thunderstorm is a common call here, and the cause is usually electrical rather than mechanical.

It storms overnight. The next morning the air conditioner runs the fan and blows warm air, or does nothing at all. That sequence is common enough in North Texas that we ask about recent weather before anything else.
What a surge actually does
A surge is a brief spike in voltage well above normal. It can come from a lightning strike nearby, from the grid switching, from a transformer event, or from a large motor elsewhere on the circuit.
Modern HVAC equipment is far more vulnerable to this than older equipment was, because it contains electronics. A control board, a variable-speed motor module and a communicating thermostat are all sensitive components that a surge can damage or destroy outright.
What tends to fail
- The control board. The most common casualty and often the most expensive single part on a modern system.
- Capacitors. A weakened capacitor may keep working for weeks and then fail, which is why the connection to the storm is not always obvious.
- The compressor. The expensive one. A surge can damage windings, and a damaged compressor may run for a while before failing.
- Variable-speed motor modules, which contain their own electronics.
- Communicating thermostats.
- The contactor, which is cheap and easy to replace.

Why this matters more here
North Texas gets a lot of thunderstorm activity, and summer grid load is high. Both of those increase surge exposure relative to milder parts of the country.

What protection actually exists
Equipment-level surge protection
A device installed at the outdoor unit and often at the air handler, protecting that specific equipment. Relatively inexpensive, straightforward to fit during a service call, and it protects the thing most likely to be expensive.
Whole-home surge protection
Installed at the electrical panel, protecting everything downstream. This is electrical work and it should be done by a licensed electrician. It covers the HVAC plus everything else with electronics in the house.
Point-of-use protection
Ordinary plug strips. Fine for a computer, irrelevant to a hardwired air conditioner.
The two useful layers are the panel and the equipment. Neither replaces the other — panel protection handles the large external events, equipment protection handles what gets through and what originates inside the house.
What to do after a storm
- Check the breaker for the outdoor unit and the air handler before assuming failure.
- Check the disconnect at the outdoor unit.
- Check whether the thermostat has power and is behaving normally.
- If the fan runs and the air is warm, stop running it — that pattern can indicate the compressor is not starting, and repeatedly attempting to start it does no good.
- Note the date of the storm. It matters for a warranty or insurance conversation.
Insurance
Damage from a lightning strike or a surge event is sometimes covered under a homeowner policy, and it is worth asking. Document the date, photograph the equipment and keep the repair invoice, which should describe the failure.
