Surge Protection for HVAC: Cheap Insurance in Storm Country
The expensive part of an air conditioner is not the part a power strip protects. Surge protection belongs at the panel and at the equipment.

We sit in an active storm corridor, and every spring and summer we replace control boards and compressors that were working perfectly the day before a line of storms came through. Lightning gets the blame, and sometimes it is right — but most damaging surges are not direct strikes.
Where surges actually come from
- Grid switching. Utilities reroute power around faults, and the switching produces transients. This is the most common source by a wide margin.
- Power restoration after an outage. The moment supply returns is a genuinely hostile electrical event.
- Nearby lightning inducing voltage on the lines, without ever hitting anything on your property.
- Large motors on your own service starting and stopping — including your own air conditioner.
That last one matters, because it means surge exposure is not only a storm-season problem. Small transients accumulate, degrading electronics gradually rather than destroying them in one event. A board that dies in August may have been dying since April.
What is vulnerable in a modern system
Older equipment was largely electromechanical and tolerant. Modern systems are not. Variable-speed blower motors have integrated electronics, inverter-driven compressors have drive boards, and communicating thermostats and control boards are computers. All of that is sensitive, and all of it is expensive.
The compressor itself is usually damaged indirectly — a surge takes out the contactor or the start components, the compressor runs in a fault condition, and it fails from that rather than from the surge directly.
The two layers
At the electrical panel
A whole-house surge protective device installed at the service panel handles the large events arriving from outside and protects everything in the building. This is the foundation and it is a modest cost, particularly if done at the same time as other electrical work.
At the equipment
A dedicated unit at the outdoor disconnect and at the air handler clamps the residual and handles transients generated inside the house. On a system with variable-speed or inverter-driven components this is worth doing without hesitation — the boards it protects cost multiples of the device.
What to look for
- A UL 1449 listing, which is the standard that matters.
- A status indicator, because these devices sacrifice themselves over time and a spent one looks identical to a working one.
- A manufacturer warranty on connected equipment, which several offer and which is worth reading rather than assuming.
- Professional installation on anything at the panel. This is not a homeowner job.
What it does not cover
Surge protection is not a substitute for other basic electrical hygiene around HVAC. A loose connection at a disconnect or contactor causes arcing and heat damage that no surge device addresses. Voltage that is chronically low or high — a different problem from a transient — damages motors over time and needs the utility involved.
And a direct lightning strike to the structure will do what it does regardless. Surge protection is about the far more common events, not the rare catastrophic one.

Is HVAC surge protection worth it?
On modern equipment with variable-speed motors, inverter compressors or communicating controls, yes — the boards being protected cost several times what the protection does. On older electromechanical equipment the case is weaker, though the panel-level device still protects everything else in the house.
Does homeowners insurance cover a surge-damaged air conditioner?
Sometimes, depending on the policy and on whether the cause can be established. It is worth documenting the storm date and getting the technician’s written diagnosis, because "board failed" and "board failed following a surge event" are different claims.
How do I know if my surge protector still works?
Look at the status indicator. These devices absorb energy and degrade with each event, and a spent one gives no outward sign other than that indicator. It is worth checking at every maintenance visit rather than assuming that installed once means protected forever.
