Adding a Gas Line for a Range, Grill or Pool Heater
Running a new gas line is straightforward work when it is done right — sized, permitted, pressure tested. Here is what actually goes into it.

Most gas line calls we get start the same way. Somebody bought a gas range to replace an electric one, or finally built the outdoor kitchen, or got tired of dragging propane tanks around to keep the pool warm in March. The appliance is the fun part. The line feeding it is the part that has to be right.
Here is what the work actually involves, what drives the cost, and the questions worth asking whoever does it.
It starts with the meter, not the appliance
Every gas appliance in your home draws from one supply. Before we run a foot of pipe, we add up what is already connected — furnace, water heater, existing range, dryer — and compare that against what your meter and existing piping can actually deliver.
That number is measured in BTUs per hour, and it is printed on a plate on every appliance. A residential range might want somewhere in the 50,000 to 65,000 BTU range. A pool heater is a different animal entirely and can ask for several times that. Adding a big load to a system that is already close to its limit is how you end up with a furnace that struggles on the coldest night of the year, because everything is fighting for the same gas.
If the demand exceeds what is available, the fix is either upsizing the piping, or calling the utility to swap the meter and regulator. Neither is a disaster. But finding that out after the pipe is buried is expensive, and it happens.
Sizing the pipe: distance matters as much as diameter
Gas pipe sizing is not a guess. It is a table, and it accounts for two things: how much gas the appliance needs, and how far the gas has to travel to get there, including every elbow and fitting along the way. Longer run, bigger pipe.
This is where undersizing shows up in real life. An outdoor grill 60 feet from the meter on a line that would have been fine at 15 feet will light, but it will not hold its heat, and the burners will drop off when something else in the house kicks on. The appliance gets blamed. The pipe is the problem.
What the installation actually looks like
The specifics change per home, but the sequence is consistent:
- Load calculation and a look at the existing system, meter and regulator.
- Route planning — attic, crawl space, under slab, or trenched outside, whichever is shortest and most serviceable.
- Pull the permit with your city. Rockwall, Rowlett, Heath, Wylie and the rest of the metro all require one for new gas piping.
- Shut off gas at the meter, run and connect the new piping.
- Install a dedicated shutoff valve at the appliance, plus a drip leg where code calls for one.
- Pressure test the line and hold it — this is the step that proves the work.
- City inspection, then relight and verify every appliance in the house, not just the new one.
That last item gets skipped more than it should. Anytime gas is shut off to a home, every pilot and igniter needs to be brought back and confirmed. Leaving a water heater dark because nobody checked is a bad afternoon for the homeowner.
Black iron, CSST, and what goes where
Two materials cover most residential work. Black iron pipe is threaded steel — rigid, durable, and the standard for exposed runs and anywhere it might take a hit. CSST is corrugated stainless flex tubing, jacketed in yellow or black, and it snakes through framing and attics far faster than rigid pipe.
CSST is legitimate and code-approved, but it has a rule attached: it must be bonded to the home's electrical grounding system. That bond exists to reduce damage from a nearby lightning strike, and North Texas gets plenty of lightning. If somebody installs CSST and skips the bond, that is a real defect, not a technicality.
For outdoor runs to a grill or pool heater, we generally use coated steel or run inside a sleeve where the line goes underground, with a shutoff you can reach without crawling behind anything.
Permits and why they are worth it
Unpermitted gas work is common and it is a bad trade. Cities in Rockwall County and across the DFW metro require a permit and inspection for new gas piping, and the inspection is a second set of eyes on a pressure test you are otherwise taking on faith.
The other cost shows up later. Unpermitted gas work turns up during a home sale inspection, and insurance carriers have been known to ask questions after a loss. A permit fee is small money against either of those.

What drives the cost
We are not going to print a price here, because the same appliance can be a quick job in one house and a full day in the next. What we will tell you is exactly what moves the number:
- Distance from the meter to the appliance. This is the single biggest factor.
- How accessible the route is. An open attic or crawl space is fast. Cutting into finished ceilings, running through a slab foundation, or trenching a long stretch of established landscaping is not.
- Whether existing piping needs upsizing to carry the added load.
- Whether the meter or regulator needs to be upgraded by the utility.
- BTU demand of the appliance — a pool heater usually needs more pipe than a range does.
- Permit and inspection fees, which vary by city.
- Whether the run is indoors or has to be rated and protected for outdoor and underground use.
A short run from a meter on the other side of the kitchen wall is a modest job. A pool heater at the back of a big lot with mature landscaping in the way is a much bigger one. Any quote given over the phone without someone seeing the route is a number picked out of the air.
Questions worth asking before you hire
- Are you pulling a permit, and is the fee in the quote?
- What did the load calculation come out to, and does my meter support it?
- What material are you running, and if it is CSST, how is it being bonded?
- Will there be a dedicated shutoff valve at the appliance?
- Will you pressure test the line and show me the gauge?
- Will you relight and verify every gas appliance in the house afterward?
Good answers come easy to anyone who does this work properly. Vague answers on permits or pressure testing tell you something.

Can I run a gas line to my grill myself?
In Texas, gas piping work requires a licensed plumber and a permit in essentially every city in the metro. Beyond the legal side, sizing, bonding and pressure testing are the parts that keep the line safe, and they are easy to get wrong. A flexible quick-connect hose from an existing outdoor stub is a different matter, but running new pipe is not a DIY job.
How long does a gas line installation take?
A short, accessible run is often done in a day, with the inspection following after. Longer runs, trenching, or work that requires opening finished walls and ceilings can stretch across two or more days. City inspection scheduling is usually what determines the final timeline, not the pipe work itself.
Do I need a bigger gas meter for a pool heater?
Sometimes. Pool heaters carry a high BTU demand, and if your home already runs a gas furnace, water heater and range, the existing meter and regulator may be near capacity. We calculate total load before quoting. If an upgrade is needed, the utility handles the meter swap and we coordinate it — better to find that out up front than after the trench is dug.
