PEX vs Copper for a North Texas Repipe: An Honest Comparison
Both are good systems and we install both. The right answer depends on your house, our water, and how much demolition you want to live through.

If you are repiping a house, you will be asked to choose between PEX and copper. Both are legitimate systems, both are code-approved, and we install both. Anyone who tells you one is simply correct and the other is simply wrong is selling something.
What follows is the actual trade-off, with the North Texas specifics that change the answer here compared to other parts of the country.
What each one is
Copper is rigid metal tube, joined by soldering or with press fittings. It has been the residential standard for generations and there are homes running eighty-year-old copper that is still sound.
PEX is cross-linked polyethylene — flexible plastic tubing joined with crimp, clamp or expansion fittings. It has been used in Europe far longer than in the US and has been mainstream in American residential construction for a couple of decades now. It is what most new construction uses.
Where PEX wins
Freeze tolerance
This matters here more than people realise. PEX expands when water inside it freezes, and it frequently survives a freeze event that would split copper. It is not freeze-proof — a hard enough freeze will still cause damage, and the fittings are less forgiving than the tube. But in a region that gets a severe freeze every few winters and has homes built without cold-climate detailing, the difference is real.
Far less demolition
PEX is flexible, so it can be routed through walls and attic with dramatically fewer fittings and fewer access holes. On a repipe, that translates directly into less drywall opened, less patching, less paint, and less time living in a construction site. For many homeowners this is the deciding factor once they understand the difference.
Pinhole corrosion resistance
This is the North Texas argument. Our water is hard and mineral-rich, and over a couple of decades that contributes to pinhole corrosion in copper — particularly on hot lines, where the chemistry is more aggressive. PEX does not corrode. If your current copper is failing with pinholes rather than from physical damage, putting more copper back in the same water is worth thinking about carefully.
Fewer joints means fewer failure points
A flexible run from a manifold to a fixture can have no intermediate joints at all. Every joint you do not make is a joint that cannot leak.
Cost
PEX is generally less expensive both in material and in labour, and the labour difference is the larger one on a whole-home repipe.
Where copper wins
Proven longevity
Copper has the track record. We know what eighty-year-old copper looks like because we can go and look at it. PEX has a strong record and manufacturers stand behind it, but the very long-term data simply does not exist yet in the same way.
UV and heat resistance
PEX degrades with prolonged UV exposure and has temperature limits. That rules it out for exposed exterior runs and requires care near flues and other heat sources. Copper does not care.
Rodents
Worth naming honestly because it comes up on rural and acreage properties around McLendon-Chisholm, Nevada and Royse City. Rodents can and occasionally do chew PEX. It is not common, but it is not zero, and in an attic with a known rodent problem it is a legitimate consideration.
Some people simply prefer it
That is allowed. If having metal pipe in your walls matters to you, that is a reasonable basis for a decision on your own house.
The routing decision that matters more than either
Here is the thing worth focusing on if you are repiping a slab home in North Texas: get the pipe out of the ground.
Modern repipes generally route supply lines overhead through the attic and down through walls rather than under the slab. The reason is straightforward — a future repair on an overhead line means opening a bit of drywall. A future repair on a line under concrete means breaking a floor.
Given our expansive clay soil, which flexes slabs through every wet and dry cycle, taking the supply system out of the ground permanently is arguably the single biggest improvement a repipe delivers — regardless of which material you choose.
A note on PEX types and fittings
Not all PEX is the same, and it is worth knowing what you are getting. PEX-A, PEX-B and PEX-C differ in how they are manufactured and in their flexibility and repair characteristics. Fitting systems differ too — expansion fittings, crimp rings and clamp rings all have different profiles and different failure histories.
You do not need to become an expert. What you should do is ask your contractor which type and which fitting system they use and why, and whether the fittings are the same brand as the tubing. A contractor who has a clear answer has thought about it.
How we usually advise it
For a typical North Texas slab home being repiped because of pinhole leaks, polybutylene, or repeated slab leaks: PEX routed overhead, for the freeze tolerance, the corrosion resistance in our water, and the substantially reduced demolition.
For exposed exterior runs, sections near heat sources, or a homeowner with a specific preference and the budget: copper, or a mixed system using copper where it makes sense.

Does PEX affect the taste of the water?
Some people report a faint plastic taste from new PEX in the first weeks, which fades as the system is used. Flushing the system thoroughly after installation and running water for a while helps. It is generally a temporary and minor issue, but it is worth knowing about so it does not come as a surprise.
Will insurance treat PEX differently from copper?
Generally no — PEX is a standard, code-approved material used throughout new construction, and it does not carry the reputation issues that polybutylene does. If you have a specific concern, ask your carrier directly. The material that genuinely does attract insurer attention is polybutylene, which is a different product entirely despite also being flexible plastic.
Can I mix PEX and copper in the same system?
Yes, and mixed systems are common — particularly on partial repipes, or where copper makes sense for a specific exposed run. The transitions need proper fittings, and where dissimilar metals meet, a dielectric union prevents galvanic corrosion. It is routine work when done properly.
How long will a repipe take and will I be without water?
For a typical single-family home, days rather than weeks, and water is restored at the end of each working day. PEX is generally faster than copper because there are fewer joints and less access to cut. Two-story homes, higher fixture counts and difficult attic access all extend it. Drywall repair and paint follow after the plumbing is signed off.
