How Often Should You Really Change Your Air Filter?

The box says 90 days. In a Rockwall summer, with pets and dust, that number is often wrong. Here is how to figure out your real interval.

The number printed on the filter box is a marketing average, not a recommendation for your house. It assumes a moderate climate, no pets, and a system that runs a normal number of hours a year. North Texas is not that. Our cooling season is long, our air carries a lot of dust, and plenty of homes here run the blower nearly nonstop from June through September.

So the honest answer to how often you should change your filter is: it depends on four things, and once you know them you can stop guessing.

What actually determines your interval

Filter life is a function of how much air passes through it and how dirty that air is. Four variables drive it in a DFW home.

  • Filter thickness. A 1-inch filter has very little media surface. A 4- or 5-inch media cabinet has many times more, which is why it lasts far longer.
  • Pets. Shedding animals load a filter faster than anything else in a typical house, dander included.
  • Runtime. A July where the system runs 18 hours a day loads a filter several times faster than a mild April.
  • Construction and dust. New builds, recent remodels, gravel drives, and homes near open fields all pull in more particulate.

Notice what is not on that list: the calendar. The calendar is a proxy for runtime, and in Rockwall the two stop matching up in the middle of summer.

Practical intervals for a North Texas home

These are the ranges we give homeowners, and they hold up well in this climate.

  • 1-inch filter, no pets: check monthly, expect to replace every 1 to 2 months. Closer to monthly in July and August.
  • 1-inch filter, with pets: monthly, essentially without exception during cooling season.
  • 1-inch filter, multiple pets or allergy sufferers: every 3 to 4 weeks.
  • 4- or 5-inch media filter: every 6 to 12 months, but pull it and look at the 6-month mark the first year to learn your own rate.
  • Washable or electrostatic: clean on the same schedule you would replace a 1-inch, and let it dry completely before it goes back in.

The reliable habit is to check on the first of the month and hold the filter up to a light. If you cannot see light through the media, it is done. That single test beats any schedule.

Why a dirty filter costs more than a filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil. Less air moving over the coil means the coil gets colder than it should. Cold enough, and condensation on the coil starts freezing instead of draining, and the ice grows until the coil is a solid block.

At that point you get the call we take a lot of in August: the system is running constantly and blowing barely-cool air. The homeowner assumes refrigerant. Often it is a filter that has not been changed since spring.

It is worse than just a bad afternoon. Restricted airflow makes the compressor work against conditions it was never designed for, and a frozen coil can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor. Compressors are the expensive part of the system. A filter is not.

The MERV question: higher is not automatically better

MERV rates how small a particle a filter captures. Higher numbers catch more. The catch is that denser media also resists airflow more, and residential systems in this area are generally designed around a fairly modest amount of static pressure.

Drop a very high-MERV 1-inch filter into a system that was not designed for it and you can create the same restriction as a dirty filter, permanently. We have measured systems where the filter alone accounted for a large share of the total static pressure in the duct system.

For most homes here, a MERV 8 to 11 in a 1-inch slot is the sweet spot: real filtration without choking the blower. If you genuinely need better filtration for allergies or asthma, the correct answer is not a denser 1-inch filter. It is a thicker media cabinet, which gets you higher MERV across far more surface area and lower resistance at the same time.

A note on the cheapest filters

The thin blue fiberglass panels barely filter anything smaller than a bug. They protect the equipment and that is about it. They do not meaningfully clean your air. If someone in the house has allergies, that filter is not doing the job you think it is.

Installing it correctly

  1. Turn the system off at the thermostat before you pull the old filter.
  2. Note the size printed on the frame of the old one before you throw it away.
  3. Find the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  4. Point that arrow toward the furnace or air handler, in the direction air is traveling.
  5. Seat it flat so there are no gaps around the edges for air to sneak past.
  6. Write the date on the frame in marker. It removes all the guesswork next time.

Backwards filters are common and they matter. The media is built with a coarse side facing incoming air and a fine side facing out, and the cardboard frame is only reinforced on one side. Installed backwards, a loaded filter can bow and eventually get pulled into the blower.

Signs your filter is overdue right now

  • Weak airflow at the supply vents compared to earlier in the season.
  • The system runs longer and longer to hit the same setpoint.
  • Visible dust settling faster on furniture and around registers.
  • A whistling sound at the return grille — that is air being pulled hard through a restriction.
  • Ice on the refrigerant line or the coil.
  • You cannot remember the last time you changed it.

That last one is the most common. Filters are easy to forget because nothing dramatic happens on the day they should have been replaced. The consequence shows up weeks later, usually on the hottest afternoon of the year.

When a new filter does not fix it

If you change the filter and the system still will not cool, the filter was a symptom rather than the cause. What we look for next is airflow through the whole system: a dirty evaporator coil, a blower wheel packed with dust, closed or crushed ducts, and undersized returns. All of them produce the same complaint.

Be cautious of any recommendation to replace equipment before anyone has actually measured airflow and static pressure. Be equally cautious of adding refrigerant year after year without finding the leak. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, it is leaking, and topping it up is renting a fix rather than buying one.

Frequently asked

Can I just vacuum a disposable filter and reuse it?

No. Disposable pleated media traps particles inside the fibers, not on the surface, so vacuuming removes very little and tends to tear the media. Torn media lets unfiltered air past and dirties your evaporator coil, which is a far more expensive cleaning than a new filter. Only filters specifically labeled washable should be cleaned and reused.

Should I change the filter more often during a Texas summer?

Yes. Filter loading tracks runtime, and a system running most of the day in July loads a filter several times faster than in a mild month. Most homes here that use 1-inch filters should be on a monthly rhythm from roughly May through September, then can stretch it in the shoulder seasons.

Is a thicker 4-inch media filter worth switching to?

For most homes, yes, if your system can accommodate one. You get better filtration, lower airflow resistance, and a change interval measured in months rather than weeks.
