Galvanized Pipe: Why Your Water Pressure Has Been Falling for Twenty Years
Galvanized pipe does not fail suddenly. It closes up slowly enough that the household adjusts, and nobody notices until a shower feels wrong.

Galvanized steel was the standard for residential water supply for decades, and in the older parts of Garland, Rowlett and central Rockwall there are still homes running it. It is steel pipe coated in zinc to resist corrosion, and the coating does its job — for a while.
Once the zinc layer is consumed, the steel underneath starts corroding from the inside out. Rust builds in layers on the interior wall, and the usable diameter shrinks. A three-quarter-inch pipe can end up passing a fraction of what it was installed to carry.
What makes it insidious is the pace. It happens over decades, slowly enough that the household adapts without noticing. People assume their water pressure is just what it is.
How to identify it
Look at exposed supply pipe — at the water heater, under sinks where lines come out of the wall, in a garage or utility area, or where the main enters the house.
- Colour: dull silver-grey, sometimes darkened to nearly black with age. It looks like plumbing pipe from an old building because it is.
- Threads: galvanized is joined with threaded fittings, so you will see threaded couplings and elbows rather than soldered joints.
- Magnet test: a magnet sticks to galvanized steel. It does not stick to copper or brass. This is the quickest definitive check.
- Scratch test: scratch it with a coin or a screwdriver. Copper shows a coppery colour underneath. Galvanized stays grey.
Note that plenty of homes are hybrids. A previous owner may have replaced the visible runs with copper while leaving galvanized inside the walls — which produces the confusing situation of copper at the fixtures and terrible pressure anyway.
The symptoms
Pressure that has slowly declined
The signature symptom. Not a sudden drop — a gradual decline over years that the household absorbed. A useful test: how does the shower behave when a toilet flushes or the washing machine fills? Severely restricted pipe cannot supply two fixtures at once.
Discoloured water
Brown, yellow or rust-tinged water, usually worst first thing in the morning or after the house has been empty. That is corrosion product that settled in the pipe overnight being flushed out. It is unappealing rather than acutely dangerous, but it tells you exactly what the inside of the pipe looks like.
Hot side worse than cold
Corrosion generally progresses faster on hot lines. If your hot water pressure is noticeably worse than cold at the same fixture, that pattern is consistent with galvanized deterioration rather than a supply problem.
Leaks appearing at threaded joints
Corrosion concentrates at threads, where the pipe wall is thinnest to begin with. When galvanized starts leaking, the joints usually go first — and once one goes, others are typically not far behind.
Why repair is usually the wrong strategy
When a galvanized joint fails, the instinct is to repair that joint. It is a reasonable instinct and it is usually a poor investment, for two reasons.
First, every other joint in the house is the same age and the same condition. Fixing one does not change the trajectory of the rest, and homeowners frequently find themselves doing this three or four times in a couple of years.
Second, and less obvious: cutting into old galvanized to make a repair disturbs the corrosion layer inside, and the debris released can lodge downstream at fixtures and valves. It is common to fix a leak and then find two fixtures behaving badly afterward.
There is also a specific pitfall with partial replacement. Where galvanized steel meets copper directly, the dissimilar metals set up galvanic corrosion at the junction, which accelerates failure right at the new connection. A dielectric union is required at any such transition, and it is a commonly skipped detail.
What replacement involves
A supply repipe, typically routed overhead through walls and attic rather than under the slab. On a North Texas slab home that routing decision matters as much as the material — it means any future repair never involves opening concrete.
Most modern repipes use PEX, for the freeze tolerance, the corrosion resistance in our hard water, and the substantially reduced demolition. Copper is available and there are situations where it makes sense. The comparison is worth having properly rather than defaulting.
Practically: days rather than weeks for a typical home, water restored at the end of each day, and most families stay put through it. Drywall patching and paint follow the plumbing sign-off.
The upside nobody mentions
Homeowners who repipe out of galvanized are consistently surprised by how much better the house feels afterward. Not just pressure — flow at multiple fixtures simultaneously, hot water arriving faster, clear water in the morning, and the end of a slow decline they had stopped noticing.

Is water from galvanized pipe safe to drink?
The rust itself is not the main concern — it is unappealing but not acutely harmful. The concern raised about older galvanized is that the zinc coating on pipe manufactured long ago could contain lead impurities, and corroding pipe can also trap and later release particles from lead solder or fittings elsewhere in the system. If you have galvanized pipe and any concern about it, water testing is inexpensive and gives you a real answer rather than speculation.
How long does galvanized pipe last?
Commonly cited service life runs to several decades, and plenty of installations exceed it. But the useful life for water delivery ends well before the pipe actually leaks, because internal corrosion restricts flow long before it breaches the wall. A galvanized system can be functionally past its usefulness while still technically holding water.
Can the pipes be cleaned out instead of replaced?
There are processes that clean and line existing pipe, and they have their applications. For residential galvanized supply, the practical issue is that the corrosion has already reduced the wall thickness as well as the diameter, so you are lining a pipe that is structurally compromised. In most cases replacement is the better value, and we would rather say that than sell a process that defers the real decision.
My house has copper at the fixtures. Am I safe?
Not necessarily. Partial replacements are common — a previous owner replaced what was accessible and left the rest inside the walls. If you have copper at the fixtures and poor pressure throughout the house, galvanized behind the walls is a strong suspect. The magnet test at the water heater and where the main enters the house tells you more than what you can see at a sink.
