MERV Ratings: Why a Better Filter Can Make Your AC Worse
Filter packaging encourages you to think higher is better. For airflow, higher is a restriction — and the fix is more surface area, not more density.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it describes how effectively a filter captures particles of various sizes. The scale runs roughly from 1 to 16 for residential filters, and the packaging is designed to make you feel that a bigger number is straightforwardly better.
For air cleaning, it is. For your air conditioner, it is a trade-off — and getting that trade-off wrong is behind a surprising number of the service calls we run.
What is actually happening
Your blower is designed to move a specific volume of air against a specific amount of resistance. Every component in the path — ducts, coil, registers, and the filter — contributes resistance, measured as static pressure. Manufacturers design equipment around a total static pressure budget, and residential systems have less headroom than most people assume.
A denser filter catches more particles by having smaller gaps for air to pass through. Smaller gaps mean more resistance. Drop a high-MERV filter into a system that was already near its static pressure limit, and airflow falls.
What reduced airflow actually does
- Freezes the evaporator coil. Not enough warm air across the coil means the refrigerant does not absorb enough heat, coil temperature drops below freezing, condensation turns to ice, and airflow stops entirely. The classic "it was working, now nothing comes out of the vents."
- Strains the blower motor. It works harder, draws more current, runs hotter, and does not last as long.
- Reduces capacity. Less air across the coil means less heat moved, so the system runs longer to achieve the same result — which shows up on the bill.
- Overheats a furnace in winter. Restricted airflow across a heat exchanger trips the high limit, and you get a furnace that starts and shuts off repeatedly.
- Makes uneven rooms worse. Marginal airflow to distant rooms becomes inadequate airflow.
None of this is theoretical. A frozen coil caused by a filter is one of the most common summer calls in this trade.
The right way to think about it
The insight that resolves the whole problem: filtration efficiency and airflow resistance are only linked if you hold surface area constant. Increase the surface area and you can have both.
That is what a four- or five-inch media cabinet does. It holds a deeply pleated filter with vastly more surface area than a one-inch panel. Air passes through a much larger total area, so resistance stays low even at high filtration efficiency. It also lasts far longer between changes, which people appreciate.
If someone recommends a high-MERV one-inch filter without measuring your system's static pressure, be cautious. If someone recommends a media cabinet after measuring, they are addressing the actual constraint.
Practical guidance by situation
No specific air quality concerns
A mid-range pleated one-inch filter is fine and is what most systems are designed around. Changing it on time matters far more than the rating on it. A moderately rated filter changed monthly beats a high-rated one left in for six months, every single time.
Allergies, asthma, or pets
This is the case for a media cabinet rather than a denser panel filter. You get genuinely better filtration without the airflow penalty, and it is a one-time installation. It is also the honest answer we give when someone asks whether they should buy an air purifier — fix the filtration and the duct leaks first.
An older or already-marginal system
Be conservative. A system already near its static pressure limit has no room for a restrictive filter, and pushing it produces exactly the failures listed above. Measure before changing anything.
The part that matters more than MERV
Here is the thing most homeowners are never told. In a great many houses, a substantial amount of air never passes through the filter at all — it bypasses around a badly fitted filter rack, or enters the system through leaks on the return side, particularly at an unsealed platform return or a duct connection in the attic.
In North Texas that unfiltered air comes from an attic full of insulation fibre and dust. Which is why the most common complaint we hear — the house is dusty despite a good filter — is usually not a filter problem at all. Sealing the return side typically produces a bigger improvement than any filter upgrade, and it is a repair rather than a purchase.

For a typical system with no specific air quality needs, a mid-range pleated filter is appropriate and is what most equipment is designed around. If you need better filtration for allergies or pets, the right answer is usually a thicker media cabinet rather than a denser one-inch filter — same or better filtration, far less airflow restriction. The genuinely correct answer for your house comes from a static pressure measurement.
Can a filter really freeze my AC coil?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes we see. The evaporator coil needs a certain volume of warm air moving across it to work. Restrict that airflow enough and the coil surface drops below freezing, condensation turns to ice, and eventually the ice blocks airflow completely. If your AC has stopped blowing, switch it to fan-only to start thawing it and check the filter first.
Are washable filters a good idea?
Generally not for whole-home HVAC. Washable filters typically offer low filtration efficiency, and they need to be completely dry before reinstalling — a damp filter in the airstream is an invitation for biological growth. The economics also matter less than people expect, since pleated filters are inexpensive. There are better places to save money.
How often should I actually change it?
A standard one-inch pleated filter generally wants changing every one to three months, and closer to monthly during heavy cooling season, with pets, or if there is construction nearby. Thicker media filters last considerably longer — often six months to a year depending on the cabinet. The reliable method regardless of type is to look at it monthly: if light does not pass through it easily, change it.
