Your AC Uses R-22. Here Is What That Actually Costs You Now

R-22 has not been produced or imported in the US since 2020. If your system still runs on it, every leak becomes a math problem instead of a repair.

If a technician has told you your system runs on R-22, you probably heard some version of "they do not make that anymore" and then a number that made you sit down. Both parts are true. What usually does not get explained is why, and what your actual options are.

Here is the honest version, from someone who charges these systems for a living.

What actually happened to R-22

R-22, sometimes called Freon, was the standard residential refrigerant for decades. It is an ozone-depleting substance, and under the Montreal Protocol the US phased it down in steps. Production and import of new R-22 in this country ended on January 1, 2020.

That is not a ban on using it. It is legal to keep running an R-22 system, and it is legal for a licensed tech to charge one. But the only R-22 that exists now is what was stockpiled before the cutoff plus what gets recovered and reclaimed out of old systems that come down. Fixed supply, shrinking every year, against demand that has not disappeared. Price goes one direction.

There is a second wave behind this one. Under the AIM Act, R-410A — the refrigerant that replaced R-22 — is itself being phased down, and new equipment has moved to lower-GWP refrigerants like R-454B. That matters mostly because it tells you the industry is not going backward. Nobody is restarting an R-22 line.

Why the repair bill is so different now

Refrigerant is not fuel. A sealed system does not consume it. If your system is low, it leaked, and it will leak again. That is the fact everything else hangs on.

A residential system holds several pounds of refrigerant, and larger tonnage holds more. When R-22 was in production, topping off a system was a minor line item. Now the same pounds come off a finite reclaimed supply, and the per-pound cost reflects that. Two or three refills across a couple of summers can quietly add up to real money on a system that is already past its useful life.

So the question stops being "what does a recharge cost" and becomes "how many more of these am I buying, and for how long."

How to tell what your system uses

  1. Walk out to the outdoor condenser unit and find the data plate, usually on the side near the electrical disconnect.
  2. Look for a line reading REFRIGERANT or FACTORY CHARGE. It will say R-22, HCFC-22, R-410A, or on newer equipment R-454B or R-32.
  3. Note the manufacture date on the same plate. Anything built after roughly 2010 is almost certainly R-410A, since new R-22 equipment stopped being made for the US market at the start of that year.
  4. Take a photo of the whole plate. Model and serial let us pull the exact tonnage and charge weight before we ever get there.

If the plate is faded past reading — common on units that have baked through fifteen North Texas summers — the service port fittings are another tell. R-410A uses a larger port than R-22. A tech can identify it in seconds.

What your real options are

Keep it running and repair as needed

Legitimate choice if the system is otherwise healthy, the leak is small and findable, and you are not planning to stay in the house long. We will still fix the leak rather than just add gas.

Repair the leak properly, then charge it

If the leak is at a fitting, a valve, or a line set joint, this is often worth doing. If it is in the evaporator coil or the condenser coil, you are looking at a major component on an old system, and coil availability for R-22 equipment is not what it was.

Replace the system

For most homeowners with a leaking R-22 unit that is fifteen-plus years old, this is where the math lands. Not because a tech says so, but because the repair spend plus the next repair spend starts to approach a real chunk of a new system that also cuts your summer bills.

What about a drop-in replacement refrigerant?

There are alternative refrigerants marketed for retrofitting R-22 systems. They exist, and in some commercial situations they make sense. On a residential system they usually require an oil change, they can affect capacity, and they can complicate warranty and future service. We will discuss it if you ask, but we are rarely the ones proposing it on a home system.

Do not let anyone skip the diagnosis

The word "R-22" should not be a shortcut to a replacement quote. Before anyone recommends a new system, they should have gauges on your unit, a temperature split measured across the coil, static pressure read on the ductwork, and an actual answer about where the refrigerant is going.

Quoting a replacement before measuring airflow is how people end up with an oversized system that short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out. That is a worse outcome than the problem they started with. It happens more than it should, and it is easy to avoid: ask what the readings were.

  • Ask where the leak is, specifically. "Somewhere in the system" is not a diagnosis.
  • Ask how many pounds your system holds and how many are going in.
  • Ask what the temperature split across the evaporator measured.
  • Ask for the repair cost and the replacement cost side by side, in writing.
  • Ask whether the existing ductwork was evaluated, not just the equipment.

If you are replacing, do it on your schedule

The worst time to buy an air conditioner in Rockwall County is the second week of August with no cooling in the house. Options narrow, patience runs out, and people sign whatever gets a truck in the driveway.

If you already know your R-22 system is on borrowed time, planning the replacement for spring or fall gives you room to compare equipment, get the sizing done properly with a load calculation instead of a guess, and address any duct issues while the system is apart. Same job, better outcome, less pressure.

Is it illegal to run an R-22 air conditioner?

No. It is legal to keep operating an R-22 system and legal for a licensed technician to service it. What ended on January 1, 2020 was US production and import of new R-22. Everything still available is pre-2020 stock or refrigerant reclaimed from decommissioned systems, which is why the cost keeps climbing.

Can my R-22 system be converted to R-410A?

Not practically. R-410A runs at much higher pressures and uses a different oil, so the condenser, the evaporator coil and often the line set all have to change. At that point you have replaced the system anyway. Alternative retrofit refrigerants exist, but on residential equipment they bring tradeoffs in capacity and serviceability that usually are not worth it.

My system only needs refrigerant once a year. Is that normal?

No. A sealed system does not use refrigerant the way an engine uses oil. If it is low, it leaked. An annual top-off means the leak has never been located, and you are paying for the same gas repeatedly while the underlying problem gets worse. Have the leak found and priced before you add another pound.
