Adding Refrigerant Every Summer? You Have a Leak

A sealed system does not use refrigerant. If yours needs charging every summer, something is leaking — and topping it off is renting cool air by the season.

Here is the part nobody explains clearly: your air conditioner does not consume refrigerant. It is a sealed loop. The same refrigerant circulates through the same copper, year after year, changing between liquid and gas but never getting used up. A car burns gas. An AC does not burn refrigerant.

So if a tech told you last June that your system was "a little low" and topped it off, and this June it is low again, you do not have a system that needs charging. You have a leak. It has been leaking the whole time, and it will keep leaking until somebody finds it.

Why the yearly top-off keeps happening

Adding refrigerant is fast. It gets a house cold that afternoon and the homeowner is happy. Finding a leak takes longer — nitrogen pressure testing, electronic sniffing, sometimes UV dye and a return trip. It is real diagnostic work and it costs more than a gauge hookup.

That is why the top-off becomes a habit. The trouble is the math never works in your favor. You pay for refrigerant every summer, the system runs inefficiently the whole time it is undercharged, and the leak usually gets worse, not better. Meanwhile the compressor is taking abuse it was never designed for.

Refrigerant is also not cheap, and what you pay depends heavily on which type your system uses. Older R-22 equipment has been phased out of production, and the cost per pound reflects that scarcity. R-410A systems are less painful but still not trivial. Either way, charging a leaking system every year adds up to more than the repair would have.

Signs your system is low on refrigerant

  • The air from the vents is cool but not cold, and the house never quite reaches the setpoint on a hot afternoon.
  • Ice on the copper suction line or on the indoor coil — a low charge drops coil temperature below freezing.
  • The system runs almost continuously in the afternoon and still loses ground.
  • A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit or along the line set.
  • Electric bills climbing without a change in how you use the thermostat.
  • Oily residue or grime collecting on a line-set fitting or on the outdoor coil, since refrigerant carries compressor oil with it.

Frozen coil deserves a note. People see ice and assume the AC is working extra hard. It is the opposite. Ice means airflow or charge is wrong, and once the coil is a block of ice, the system moves no air at all. Shut it off, run the fan alone to thaw it, and get it looked at before you run cooling again.

Where these systems actually leak

In DFW homes we find leaks in a handful of predictable places. Evaporator coils are the most common, especially on units in the 8-to-15-year range. Formicary corrosion eats pin-sized holes through the aluminum from the inside out, driven by ordinary household chemicals in the indoor air. You cannot see those holes. You find them by pressure.

Next are the brazed joints and flare fittings at the outdoor unit, especially where a line set was cut and rejoined during a past repair. Schrader valve cores leak slowly and constantly, and they are cheap to replace once found. Line sets running through an attic can chafe where they pass a joist. And after a hard freeze, the thermal cycling North Texas equipment goes through can open a joint that was already marginal.

The attic matters here more than people think. A Rockwall attic in August is brutal, and equipment installed up there lives a harder life than a system in a conditioned closet.

What a real leak search looks like

  1. Verify the charge properly — superheat and subcooling readings, not just a pressure gauge and a guess.
  2. Confirm airflow first. A dirty filter or a collapsed duct produces symptoms that look identical to low charge, and no one should be adding refrigerant to fix an airflow problem.
  3. Recover the remaining refrigerant rather than venting it. Venting is illegal and it is also just bad practice.
  4. Pressurize the system with dry nitrogen and hold it, then locate the drop with an electronic detector and soap solution at the fittings.
  5. If the leak is slow and hiding, inject UV dye, run the system, and come back to find it under a lamp.
  6. Repair the joint or replace the failed component, pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture and air, then weigh in the exact factory charge.

That vacuum step gets skipped more than it should. Moisture left in a system combines with refrigerant and oil to form acid, and acid is what kills compressors. Weighing in the charge by the manufacturer's spec instead of eyeballing gauges is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that comes back.

When repair makes sense and when it does not

An accessible leak at a fitting, a bad Schrader core, or a chafed line in the attic is usually a straightforward repair and worth doing on almost any system. Cost lands in the modest-repair range, driven mostly by how much refrigerant has to go back in and how long the leak takes to find.

An evaporator coil is a bigger conversation. If the coil is under warranty, the part may be covered and you are paying labor and refrigerant. If it is out of warranty and the system is over a decade old, you are putting a significant repair into equipment that is already near the end of its service life, and the compressor has spent years running low on charge.

R-22 systems are their own case. Production has ended, so the refrigerant now comes from recovered and stockpiled supply at a price that reflects it. Charging an R-22 system with a known leak is the least economical thing you can do with your money. We will lay out repair versus replacement numbers side by side and let you decide.

What you can do before we get there

  • Change the filter. Restricted airflow mimics low charge and it is free to rule out.
  • Check that all supply and return vents are open and unblocked by furniture.
  • Look at the outdoor coil. If it is packed with cottonwood, grass clippings, or dryer lint, rinse it gently with a hose from the inside out.
  • If the coil or line set is iced, turn cooling off and set the fan to ON so it can thaw. Do not chip at the ice.
  • Note when the problem shows up. Only on hot afternoons? Only after it runs a few hours? That detail speeds up diagnosis.

One thing to leave alone: the sealed refrigerant circuit itself. Those DIY top-off cans sold at auto parts stores are not designed for residential HVAC, they include sealant that can contaminate a system and foul recovery equipment, and adding refrigerant without measuring superheat and subcooling is as likely to overcharge as to help. An overcharged system floods liquid back to the compressor, which is an expensive way to make things worse.

How often should an AC need refrigerant added?

Never, under normal operation. The refrigerant circuit is sealed, so a properly charged system holds the same charge for its entire life. If your system needs refrigerant on any recurring schedule, the correct diagnosis is a leak, not a top-off.

Can you just add a sealant instead of finding the leak?

We do not recommend it. Sealants can circulate and clog metering devices, and many manufacturers and recovery equipment makers warn against them. On a very small pinhole they sometimes buy time, but they do not replace finding and repairing the actual leak, and they can complicate any future repair.

Is a refrigerant leak dangerous to my family?

Modern refrigerants are not acutely toxic at the levels a home leak produces, and most leaks disperse harmlessly. That said, a large release in a small enclosed space can displace oxygen, so if you hear a strong hiss and smell something sharp in a closed utility closet, ventilate the area, leave it, and call us. The bigger risk is usually to your compressor, not your health.
