It hums but does not spin
The motor has power but the plate is jammed. Usually something hard wedged between the impeller and the ring. Leave it running in this state and you will burn the motor out.
Nothing happens at all
Check the reset button on the underside of the unit first — it trips more often than people expect. After that: the breaker, the switch, or a failed motor.
Water under the sink
Leaks at the sink flange or the discharge tube are repairable. A leak from the bottom of the housing itself means the internal seal has failed and the unit needs replacing.
The sink backs up when the disposal runs
This is a drain problem, not a disposal problem. The line downstream is restricted, and running the disposal just proves it.
Grinding, rattling, or a sudden increase in noise
Something in the chamber, or worn impellers and bearings. Worth investigating before it becomes a jam.
A smell that comes back after cleaning
Food residue in the grinding chamber and under the splash guard. Usually cleanable — and if it is not, that points to buildup in the drain line beyond.

Power off, then look
Breaker off before anything goes near the chamber. Never put a hand in a disposal, even with the switch off.
Clear the jam and reset
Manual rotation from the hex socket underneath frees most jams, then the obstruction comes out and the reset restores power. Many calls end here.
Check the drain line, not just the unit
If the sink backs up under load, the trap and branch line get inspected. Replacing a disposal that was never the problem is a waste of your money.
Replace properly if it is done
New unit sized to the household, correct mounting to the sink flange, dishwasher discharge connected with the knockout removed — the classic missed step — and drain alignment checked so nothing is under strain.

My disposal is humming. What do I do?
Turn it off immediately — running a jammed motor is how you destroy it. Kill the breaker. Most units have a hex socket on the underside; a wrench in that socket, worked back and forth, frees the plate. Then remove whatever caused the jam with tongs or pliers, never your hand, and press the red reset button on the bottom. If it still will not turn, stop there and call.
What should never go in a garbage disposal?
Grease and oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke, onion skins, pasta and rice which keep swelling, bones, and fruit pits. The general test: if it is stringy, starchy, or greasy, it belongs in the trash. Almost every jam we clear involves something on that list.
Is a leaking disposal repairable?
Depends where it is leaking from. At the top sink flange, at the dishwasher connection, or at the discharge tube — all repairable, and usually inexpensive. From the bottom of the housing, no. That means the internal shaft seal has failed and water is getting into the motor. That unit needs replacing.
How long should a disposal last?
Ordinary residential use gets you a good number of years out of a decent unit, though it depends heavily on what goes into it and the build quality. Cheaper units with lighter motors give up sooner. If yours is old, noisy, and jamming frequently, replacing it is often more sensible than repeated repairs.
